NFL Fans Unhappy With The League's Potential Move On Thanksgiving Eve
The NFL expansion plan with games scheduled for international venues has not sat well with fans in the past.
Now, the decision to play a game on Thanksgiving Eve has not gotten everyone on board.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL is exploring the possibility of scheduling a game on Thanksgiving this season. If this is approved, the match will be played on Wednesday, November 25th. The NFL is hoping to turn this into an iconic multi-day event on the football calendar.
Thanksgiving has been one of the biggest draws for the NFL, with the first game dating back to 1934. The Cowboys and the Detroit Lions have traditionally played on Thanksgiving Day and have made this a marquee event for the teams’ fan bases.
Expanding this to another day would mean more revenue and viewership.
Playing on Thanksgiving Eve, however, may impact the players and teams. It would shorten recovery time and would impact player safety and performance over a long, drawn-out season. Injuries to quarterbacks, which have risen over the years, remain a possibility in an already jam-packed schedule.
The idea remains in its infancy, with the proposal yet to be approved. Fans, however, are not very happy if any games are to be played on Thanksgiving Eve.
Fans Express Their Frustration Over The Thanksgiving Eve proposal
Fans have expressed frustration on social media, with the primary concern being scheduling fatigue. One fan bluntly stated, “I don’t know if there’s a single person who wants this.”
Matchday usually has games on Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays. With Thanksgiving Eve on a Wednesday, it may create chaos in the calendar.
“No team should have to play Sunday and then Wednesday. This should be a game featuring only teams who either play Thursday night the week prior or are coming off a BYE,” a fan wrote
There is also concern that this may lead to an overdose of NFL every week. “ Soon, NFL football every night of the week”, a fan chimed in.
Fans are also worried about their favorite players not having enough time for recovery.
One fan sarcastically said, “ Player safety is 'definitely' at the forefront of what the NFL truly cares about... Greed above everything for the NFL."
