NFL Fans Make Feelings Known as Jeff Bezos Emerges as Favorite to Take Over the Seahawks
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is now the frontrunner to purchase the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks franchise has now been put up for sale by the estate of Paul G Allen.
Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft and prior owner of the Seahawks, passed away in 2018. The franchise is now being run by his sister Jody Allen, under the Paul G Allen Estate. The final price for the franchise could be anywhere between $7-10 billion.
The sale could be right up Jeff Bezos’ alley, given the buzz around the Seahawks’ Super Bowl win. He could also be one of the few businessmen with the purchasing power to buy the franchise outright.
But this shouldn't come as a complete surprise to fans. Bezos has been keen on buying an NFL franchise before.
He earlier wanted to buy the New York Jets in 2024, which was listed at $6.5 billion at the time. Before that, he was linked with the Washington Commanders after Dan Snyder put the franchise for sale at $6.05 billion.
With none of those deals materializing for Bezos, the fact that the Seattle Seahawks are now up for sale has rekindled some buzz around the Amazon founder.
If this sale were to close, it could be the largest deal made for the sale of an NFL franchise.
Fans have mixed reactions to Jeff Bezos’ potential Seahawks purchase
Some fans see Bezos potentially buying the Seahawks as a tribute to his earlier days with Amazon, when he started Amazon in a garage in his Seattle home.
One fan commented positively, saying, “It's his home away from home and where he started Amazon. He should buy the Seahawks. It's best when local billionaires buy their own city's franchises instead of outsiders.”
Others are not happy with Bezos’ potential acquisition of the Seahawks.
“If he does, Seattle will lose 100 million fans. I've watched them since the '80s. If Jeff buys them, I wouldn't watch them anymore, and so would millions of people. Jeff is a bad CEO,” one disappointed fan commented.
Bezos had moved from Seattle to Miami in late 2023. Some fans saw this as a sign that he would not want to rekindle ties with Seattle.
“He doesn’t want it. He just got away from Seattle,” a fan wrote.
Long-time Seahawks fans, who were used to Paul Allen’s ownership for over two decades, do not want to see Bezos take up the mantle.
“As a longtime Seahawk fan… H*** NO!” a fan said.
Still, some fans were okay as long as Bezos lets the pros handle their jobs. One practical fan chimed in, “As long as he lets the football people do their job as Paul did. It’s fine.”
Do you think Bezos will finally buy an NFL franchise in the form of the Seahawks? Let us know in the comments.
