Insider: Eagles Have Set Timeline to Trade A. J. Brown

Mar 12, 2026, 12:56 AM CUT

A.J. Brown's time in Philadelphia could be ending soon. An NFL insider reports it's 'not a matter of if, but when' the Eagles trade their star receiver.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio revealed on March 11 that he has been talking to an unnamed source about the matter. "Someone who insists that the Eagles have to trade AJ Brown," said Florio.

The analyst revealed how the Eagles' system will create a cap space issue if they don't. "They do annual option bonuses with voidable years, cash over cap, and what it does is create situations where you have these big cap numbers as the contracts mature," explained the analyst.

"It makes it very hard to trade or cut a player because it sparks a significant dead cap charge. And next year, 2027, the Eagles get jammed up on their cap, and it would be advantageous to get A.J. Brown off the books now,” added the Pro Football Talk host.

Brown is currently with the Philadelphia Eagles after having signed a three -year contract extension worth $96 million.  The deal severely hits the cap, including $23.39M for 2026.

Brown had a subpar 2025 season for his standards. Despite posting more than 1,000yards for a fourth year in a row, early-season injuries and a fallout with head coach Nick Sirianni led to his frustrations.

He, at one point, called the season a "s*** show" in a stream with a content creator. Florio believes the ship has sailed for Brown, despite general manager Howie Roseman stating that he was in their plans for the upcoming season.

Rob Gronkowski urges the New England Patriots to pursue A. J. Brown

After the New England Patriots fell short at the Super Bowl, former tight end Rob Gronkowski believes that they must get Brown to stay competitive.

Speaking on the “Up and Adams” show, he urged the front office to get Brown to Gillette Stadium.

“If they want to be contenders, they gotta get a true No. 1 wide receiver now,” Gronkowski said. “I mean, they let go of Stefon Diggs, he had a solid year, and they gotta get A.J. Brown. I mean, they just missed out on Alec Pierce; they missed out on Mike Evans. They gotta go get him, A.J. Brown, I feel like he wants to be a Patriot.”

The Patriots have been heavily linked with the wide receiver. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stated that the Patriots "seem to be the most interested in A.J. Brown."
