Deshaun Watson has shown flashes of improvement through two games, but his return has not been completely smooth. He struggled in Cleveland’s 34-10 loss to Jacksonville before producing a much stronger performance against Tampa Bay.

Through two games, Watson has completed 40 of 52 passes for 443 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also has 60 rushing yards, showing the Browns have another dimension available through his legs.

Still, Watson has appeared somewhat cautious while getting back into rhythm after missing almost 22 months. That is understandable, especially after his lengthy recovery, but Todd Monken wants his quarterback to stop worrying about what could go wrong.

Monken believes Watson has already done the hardest part by completing his long road back. Now, the Browns coach wants him to trust that preparation and play freely.

“What have you worked for 22 months to come back? To play and give yourself a chance to play at a high level. What do you have to fear? Let it rip, man.”

That message is particularly important with Cleveland finally returning home. Watson knows the crowd could be difficult, but Monken does not want him allowing that possibility to affect his football.

The Browns need their quarterback playing confidently if they hope to build on their Week 2 victory. Monken clearly believes Watson has earned the freedom to play without fear.

Watson has already attempted to ease tensions with Cleveland supporters ahead of the home opener. After the difficult relationship between the quarterback and the Dawg Pound, he made it clear that he does not want another battle with the fans.

“I never try to go to war with the fans.”

Now, Monken is delivering a similar message from inside the building. Watson has put in the work to return, and his coach wants him to trust it.

If Watson can play with that freedom against Carolina, the Browns could discover just how much more their quarterback has to offer.
