Deshaun Watson and his relationship with Browns fans has been complicated since his return from injury. He has gone back and forth with supporters since the preseason after several disrespectful interactions. Cleveland fans have wanted him out since his return, making every appearance difficult.

That tension only grew as Watson struggled to deliver consistently. Cleveland opened the season with a 34-10 loss to Jacksonville, putting his future under the microscope. With Shedeur Sanders waiting behind him, Watson faced enormous pressure heading into Week 2.

However, everything changed against Tampa Bay. Watson played a pivotal role in the Browns’ 23-19 victory, throwing for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Suddenly, the conversation shifted from replacing Watson to whether he could continue as Cleveland’s QB1.

Now, Watson prepares for the Browns’ first home game. Rather than continuing the feud, he wants to reconnect with the Dawg Pound.

“I never try to go to war with the fans. So I think the biggest thing is just ready for support, ready to feel their energy, ready to get this big dub for the city of Cleveland.”

That represents a major change. Continued production could improve the relationship and clarify his future.

Deshaun Watson Could Still Face Plenty of Boos in Cleveland

Michael Irvin previously warned that Watson could still face plenty of boos at home. He said the Week 2 victory was “the last thing” Cleveland wanted because it guaranteed another start.

Irvin noted that Cleveland had already promised Watson another opportunity after Week 1. His victory over Tampa Bay therefore extended a situation many fans wanted resolved.

Now, Watson has a chance to change the atmosphere himself. A strong performance against Carolina could further win over the Dawg Pound. Another poor showing, however, could bring those boos back quickly.
