Bad News For Shedeur Sanders After Todd Monken's Latest Statement

The spotlight has quickly shifted to Shedeur Sanders after the latest comments from head coach Todd Monken. The new head coach's stance has raised questions about Sanders’ standing in the quarterback debate.

As Shedeur Sanders stays hopeful to land the QB1 role, Monken highlighted Deshaun Watson first when discussing early impressions.

While he acknowledged positives from all three quarterbacks, including Sanders, the emphasis raised questions about where the new primary option truly stands heading into the next phase, per Mary Kay Cabot.

“Deshaun looked really good at times, and there's other things you got to work on,” Monken said. “Same with Shedeur and with Dylan. So I didn't, I really didn't do a deep dive into all of them.”

The Cleveland Browns held a voluntary veteran minicamp from April 21 to 23 at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus.

At the minicamp, new Head Coach Todd Monken conducted 11-on-11 non-contact drills early in the offseason.

Key takeaways from minicamp pointed to increased reps for Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson. But the bigger picture sits at quarterback, where the room is already crowded, and Todd Monken appears to be weighing options carefully.

Watson coming off a season-ending Achilles tear in January 2025, after already dealing with another Achilles injury in 2024, a shoulder scapula fracture, and a rotator cuff tear in 2023.

Despite that, Monken is still leaning on what Watson has shown when healthy.

In 2020, he played all 16 games, throwing for 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns, a level that still carries weight in evaluations.

“The ball’s coming out great," Monken said after the practice. "I can’t get into his body to know how his body felt. But he moved around great, and the ball came out great.”

While Watson's case grows stronger, the 2026 Draft also brought in another QB into the locker room, adding a new name to the QB debate.

Browns Add a Fourth Quarterback in 2026 Draft

With their pick No. 182, the Cleveland Browns have drafted another quarterback, Taylen Green, in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Known for his record-setting 2026 NFL Combine performance, he possesses running ability and a big arm, having played for Boise State and Arkansas.

At the NFL Combine, he recorded a 43.5-inch vertical jump (QB record), an 11-foot-2-inch broad jump (QB record), and a 4.36-second 40-yard dash (2nd fastest by a quarterback in Combine history).

Last year, he threw for 2,714 yards while scoring 19 touchdowns in 12 games.

With uncertainty around Shedeur and Deshaun’s struggles with their injuries, the Browns now continue their search for a long-term solution to their QB problems.
