The debate of natural grass over artificial turf has returned to the spotlight. Many NFL venues installed natural grass for the 2026 FIFA World Cup before planning to switch back to turf, and players have questioned why the same cannot be maintained for football.

George Kittle shared a post on X calling for permanent grass fields across NFL stadiums because it prevents players from unnecessary injuries. His comments sparked a discussion on social media, where some fans believed that this change was not going to happen.

"George, it's never going to happen because as long as NFL owners value profits over players' health, you'll never get grass," said an NFL fan writing on his X post.

The fan's statement on X post conveyed a criticism of the NFL owners. Maintaining the artificial turf is less costly and more practical because stadiums frequently host concerts and other major events.

Looking from that perspective, owners may prioritize venue flexibility and costs, even when players continue to plead for natural grass.

In response to the cost angle, players have been making their feelings heard under the hashtag "#worththecost."

"Grass still looks great! Let’s use grass instead of turf @NFL !! Please? Thanks, guys!" wrote George Kittle on his X.

Not just Kittle, but many players like George Pickens, Caleb Williams, Laremy Tunsil, and Jonathan Taylor asked for natural grass after watching the FIFA World Cup.

According to the NFLPA (NFL Players Association), 92% of roughly 1,700 players in the survey preferred natural grass. FIFA also required every World Cup venue to install natural grass, proving that even indoor stadiums can accommodate it.

Still, the venues are expected to return to turf as the World Cup has ended. The natural grass reduces stress on players' bodies and could reduce injury risks, while the NFL has maintained that modern turf is safe enough.

Whether the NFL embraces natural grass is uncertain, but the reactions from fans show the debate is far from over.

As George Kittle stated on his X post about moving away from artificial turf, fans reacted on X supporting his point and were frustrated as no actions were seen after repeated calls from players.

"All NFL football games should be played in open-air stadiums on real grass. Change my mind," said a fan.

The fan believed the NFL should prioritize traditional football environments over modern stadiums. Meanwhile, others were cynical about the reality of things.

"If only there existed @NFLPA and their dues-paying members had more leverage than unskilled labor," said the second fan.

Despite the NFLPA representing players' interests, its influence is limited when it comes to changes like replacing turf, as per the fan's sarcastic comment.

"Think ya’ll should negotiate it in the contract. Better for the body," said another fan.

The fan suggested that players should make natural grass a contractual requirement during labor negotiations, which would be the most effective way for players.

Some questioned the cost-cutting reasons in terms of what was at stake.

"Owners don't care, to much overhead to maintain grass, but losing a million dollar player is cool...," one more fan wrote.

Still, the issue is a hot topic due to disagreement between the league and the NFLPA.
