Dan Labbe is already pushing back on any Cleveland Browns plans that might involve controversial quarterback Brendan Sorsby. The Browns’ analyst has issued a warning against Sorsby, who has declared for the NFL Supplemental Draft.

“The worst thing you can do in trying to figure out how to approach Brendan Sorsby in the supplemental draft is to view him as a magic bullet, a shortcut to completing a multi-year rebuild the Browns began in the 2025 offseason,” he wrote on June 18 for Cleveland.com. 

The former Texas Tech Red Raiders QB exited college football unceremoniously, caught up in a legal tussle with the NCAA. The governing body was investigating him for g******* and placing b*** as a student-athlete.

The NCAA had banned him from partaking in football-related activities, and he countered with a lawsuit. 

Mary Kay Cabot, a veteran Browns’ insider, opined that Sorsby’s capabilities on the field will soon take over as conversations about him. Labbe is against the Browns involving themselves with him. 

The Browns are notorious for lacking a long-term franchise quarterback. Right now, they are caught up in a race between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson for the QB1 position.

“But there’s also too much risk there to go all in on him,” he wrote.

Adding the 22-year-old dual-threat Sorsby to the mix would further complicate things.

Standing at 6’2 and 223 lbs, Brendan Sorsby is a dual-threat quarterback who has declared for the Supplemental Draft. Dan Labbe, despite Sorsby’s undeniable talent, has warned the Browns against him.

“Those raw traits, though, are why a team might risk a high draft pick to bring him in. His size, arm strength and athleticism are NFL-caliber, even if his game isn’t completely there yet,” he wrote. 

He made 31 starts, seven for the Indiana Hoosiers in 2023. For the Cincinnati Bearcats, he recorded 5,613 passing yards and 45 passing touchdowns with 205 carries to accumulate 1,027 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. 

Mary Kay Cabot drew parallels between Sorsby and another controversial QB, Deshaun Watson.

“Look at how many teams were in on Deshaun Watson…People do get stars in their eyes when they see a dual-threat guy that can rush for touchdowns, can throw for touchdowns. I do think that there will be teams who bite despite what's going on with him,” she said in a conversation with Dan Labbe and Ashley Bastock. 

She brought her point in the Orange and Brown Talk podcast on June 17. Cabot was referring to Watson, who was suspended for 11 games and fined $5 million in 2022 for violating NFL guidelines on misconduct. 

The Bearcats had sued Sorsby for a $1 million exit fee after his Red Raiders transfer. He never got to play for Texas Tech due to his legal troubles.

Sorsby has put forth a commendable performance on the collegiate level, so that raises the question: if a team, any team, did pursue him, would it be worth it? What do you think?
