Will Campbell Issues Public Apology After Ditching Post-Game Duty
Emotions were running high for rookie Will Campbell after he lost his first Super Bowl on Sunday. But should he have declined all post-game pressers? Probably not.
Campbell agrees and has come forth and apologized since then.
Taylor Kyles, a New England Patriots expert, shared an X post on Tuesday and reported that Campbell is sorry for ditching the reports and even offered an explanation.
“Will Campbell apologizes to reporters for not speaking after the Super Bowl, admitting he was feeling a lot of emotions and wanted to get his head on straight,” Kyles wrote.
The 22-year-old took time to speak on the disastrous game against the Seattle Seahawks, in fear of saying something wrong. Especially since Campbell is responsible for how the game panned out.
“When I get emotional, I tend to have no mind, and that’s not the way that I need to approach this thing,” he said.
“I know myself, and if I would have spoken after, I would have said something that I didn’t need to say. So, I slept on it, I watched it. I know what I have to get better at and move on.”
In the 2025 NFL Draft, the Patriots swooped in for Campbell as the 4th overall pick, projected to be a reliable offensive tackle. But, in the weeks leading upto the Super Bowl, he failed to deliver on numerous occasions. And Sunday’s game was the worst of them all.
Campbell’s inability to hold back the Seahawks’ defence contributed to quarterback Drake Maye getting sacked a whopping six times.
According to Next Gen Stats, Campbell allowed 14 pressures on Maye. That game was the most pressure allowed by any player in a game across regular and postseason. But that can be attributed to his injury.
Campbell’s Future and Coach Mike Vrabel’s Reaction
Campbell also revealed that he had dealt with a torn ligament in his knee, which affected him in the playoffs. But that is no excuse for a rookie who was offered a four-year, $43.66 million contract. And Campbell knows that.
“It comes with the job when you don't perform. Obviously, I was picked high, paid a lot, so people expect a certain thing, and I expect more myself,” he told reporters on Tuesday.
But like Maye, Campbell is also a young player who was involved in one of the biggest turnarounds by a franchise. And head coach Mike Vrabel knows that. He backed Campbell and said he will improve and remain the left tackle.
“Will is 22 years old, he's our left tackle, he'll get better, he'll get stronger. There are moments he played well, moments he blocked the guy, there are plays he'd like to have back,” Vrabel stated.
“We're not moving Will to guard, or center or tight end or anywhere else.”
The Patriots ended the season with a 14-3 record. They last won a championship in 2019, but said they will be back next season.
