“Upsetting”: Jared Verse Makes Feelings Abundantly Clear on Trade to Browns
Jared Verse needed some time to process his sudden trade to the Cleveland Browns. The former Los Angeles Rams star spoke openly during his introductory press conference about the shock of the move.
“It caught me by surprise. I was, I loved LA. I love the coaches, the organization, my teammates…the staff, the fans, you know…and it, it was upsetting. But when you're an athlete, you understand the nature of business,” he said June 3.
Verse has been a high-impact player for the Rams since his rookie season. The 25-year-old defender was picked 19th overall by the Rams in 2024.
A Florida State talent, Verse was the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year and has a short but commendable record. He has appeared in all games from 2024, resulting in a 34-game career.
Verse has posted 124 total tackles out of which 71 are solo and has racked up 12 sacks. He has recorded five forced fumbles and returned two fumbles.
Last season, Verse, already a two-time pro bowler, was a part of the post-season squad that did not make it to the Super Bowl. He had recorded seven total tackles. Despite the loss, Verse showed full faith in himself and his team during his interview with DJ Siddiqi.
“When you stop beating yourself up, it's easy to win. We have all the pieces we need. We got great DB's, we got great linebackers, our defensive line is the best…amazing safeties, quarterback is the reigning MVP, amazing running back, O-line, wide receivers, kick returners, kickers, punters, snappers,” he said as reported by NFL.com on May 7.
Myles Garrett is a two-time and reigning Defensive Player of the Year. He wanted out of the Browns, unsatisfied with their record. He had asked for a trade in the preseason of 2025.
To acquire Garrett, the Rams gave away Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick.
The trade ends Verse's hopes for another Super Bowl run with Los Angeles. Yet, he’s bringing the same energy to the Browns.
“The Best Of Me:” Jared Verse Reveals His Motto As He Begins His Journey With Browns
During his introductory press conference with the Cleveland Browns, new defensive end Jared Verse did not shy away from admitting his real feelings over the new developments.
He was also clear on his identity and the role he will play in the team.
“My job is to be the best me. If I'm the best me, I'm not going to be Myles Garrett, I'm not going to be Maxx Crosby, this guy, that guy, the best players in the league. I'm going to be the best Jared,” he said on June 3.
Verse has swapped places with Myles Garrett on a team that boasts the fourth-best overall defense. The offense, ranked 30th overall, however, is a challenge.
