"Unite People": NFL Commissioner Clears Stance on Bad Bunny's Half-Time Show Performance

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has publicly backed Bad Bunny ahead of his Super Bowl LX halftime performance when the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks.

At the annual NFL press conference on Monday in the Bay Area, Goodell was asked what he thought about Bad Bunny and Green Day using the stage to make a political statement.

Although Goodell didn’t touch the sensitive issue directly, he did say, “Bad Bunny is one of the great artists in the world. That’s one of the reasons we chose him. But the other reason is he understood the platform he was on.”

The question arose following the Puerto Rican’s acceptance speech for the Best Música Urbana Album for Debí Tirar Más Fotos. The artist made a political statement, and reporters wanted to know if he would do so during the halftime at the Super Bowl.

Goodell cleared his stance by stating, “This platform is used to unite people and to be able to bring people together with their creativity … I think Bad Bunny understands that and I think he'll have a great performance.”

Bad Bunny becomes the first-ever Latino and Spanish-speaking artist to have a solo at the world’s biggest stage. The 31-year-old described what the opportunity meant to him.

Bad Bunny Talks About His Super Bowl Performance

About performing at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Sunday, Feb. 8, he said, “What I’m feeling goes beyond myself. It’s for those who came before me and ran countless yards so I could come in and score a touchdown… this is for my people, my culture, and our history.”

The performance could be on its way to breaking viewership records. Last year, Kendrick Lamar, along with SZA, set the record for the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show with 133.5 million views.
