Unexpected Call: Packers Start Clayton Tune Despite Jordan Love Clearing Protocol

The Green Bay Packers have clinched their playoff berth and secured the No. 7 seed in the 2025 NFL season. However, they are going into the final Game Week with three consecutive losses.

They suffered an embarrassing 41-24 loss against the Baltimore Ravens. Derrick Henry tormented their defence, scoring 4 touchdowns for 216 rushing yards on 36 carries. Malik Wills replaced Green Bay’s QB1, Jordan Love, because the latter did not clear the concussion protocol.

He suffered a concussion in the second half in a gritty 22-16 overtime loss against the Chicago Bears. According to the head coach, Matt LaFleur made it clear in the press conference that Love wouldn’t start against the Vikings, despite clearing the concussion protocol. LaFleur also announced that Clayton Tune would get his first start this season.

“Well, so Clayton Tune’s going to start. And as for the backup, we are kinda working through that process right now. Malik’s dealing with a hamstring. So we’ll just kind of take it a day at a time.”

In their last week’s loss against the Ravens, Malik Wills started and showed up. He scored a touchdown for 286 passing yards and missed only three out of 21 passes. However, after he also suffered a hamstring injury, Tune has to step up. It’s a good thing there’s nothing for the Packers in this game, as they’ve already sealed their playoff spot.

Jordan Love puts trust in Clayton Tune ahead of the Vikings Challenge

Jordan Love proved why he was the QB1 for Green Bay this season, scoring 23 touchdowns for 3381 passing yards.

However, his season ended due to an injury in his left shoulder and a concussion he suffered in Week 16. With Cleyton Tune starting against the Vikings, the 27-year-old surely put some belief in him. He was impressed by Tune’s running ability and speed.

“He’s been doing a great job in practice just making plays, understanding the scheme and when stuff’s not there, he’s making some pretty cool off-schedule plays. I’m excited to see him play,” Love said.

Well, not just Love, but Malik Wills also praised Tune. “He’s just been a sponge,” Willis said. “soaking up everything we talk about in the meeting room; asking questions and even putting in his input on stuff he feels the most comfortable about. He’s been doing a great job.”

In the 41-24 loss against the Ravens, Tune only attempted 4 passes, completing one. He also conceded an interception and a sack. While that showing was not impressive, the 26-year-old will certainly get more time to show his capabilities. Let us know in the comments what you think about this decision!
