Ty Simpson Revealed as Key Reason Behind Myles Garrett's Trade to Rams

The blockbuster NFL trades often have a story behind them, and the Los Angeles Rams trade of Myles Garrett appears to be no exception. While many fans focused on the arrival of one of the league's most dominant pass rushers, a quarterback factor behind the deal has now surfaced.

The Rams' decision to draft Ty Simpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft gave the franchise the confidence to pursue Garrett aggressively. With reigning MVP Matthew Stafford already in, the Rams felt comfortable sacrificing future draft capital to get a proven star.

"One detail the #Rams have privately stressed: The Myles Garrett trade likely doesn’t happen if they don’t draft Ty Simpson at No. 13," insider Ari Meirov's X post read. "With a QB they believe can be the future already in place, the Rams are once again comfortable using future draft capital to acquire elite talent."

By securing Simpson before making the trade, the franchise solved its future QB question. This move allowed general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay to part with draft assets without looking for selections to replace Stafford.

In exchange for Garrett with the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles sent Jared Verse and a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick, creating one of the biggest transactions of the NFL offseason.

It is not hard to see why the Rams were willing to pay such a steep price. Garrett is coming off an NFL-record 23-sack season. In Los Angeles, his ability raises the ceiling of a team with Super Bowl ambitions.

Meanwhile, the Browns walk away with one of the NFL's most promising young pass rushers. Verse has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons and already has 12 career sacks.

Naturally, the deal was also incomplete without Jared Verse, and the team's general Manager recently opened up on their plan.

Andrew Berry Reveals Why Jared Verse Was a Deal-Breaker in the Myles Garrett Trade

The Browns' decision to trade Myles Garrett to the Rams shocked the NFL, but general manager Andrew Berry has now revealed the key factor that made the deal possible- Jared Verse.

Speaking after the trade, Berry described Verse as a "huge part" of the return package.

"Jared Verse, he's a huge part of this return for us," the General Manager revealed on June 2. "...Former Defensive Rookie of the Year, two-time original ballot Pro Bowler and he's a perfect DNA match for our attacking front. He's really a terror in both phases as a run defender and pass rusher. And we are really excited to add him to our team."

Verse gave Cleveland a cost-controlled star at a premium position, something Berry considered essential before moving on from Garrett. The Browns also received draft capital over the next three years to use as they see fit.

Replacing Garrett is nearly impossible, but the Browns believe Verse can help maintain their defensive identity while providing significant upside for the coming years.
