23-Year-Old NFL Rookie Announces Shocking Retirement Four Days After Signing

A 23-year-old rookie just gave up his NFL dream, four days after signing with the Miami Dolphins. The move ends the former Texas A&M star’s professional career before his first rookie minicamp.

Le'Veon Moss was one of those 11 undrafted free agents the Dolphins added before the rookie minicamp on May 8 and 9.

"The Miami Dolphins placed undrafted rookie RB Le'Veon Moss, formerly of Texas A&M, on the reserve/retired list," the Sun Sentinel's David Furones reported.

The Dolphins have not issued an official explanation for the retirement.

Moss entered camp with a significant injury history that likely influenced his decision.

He had a torn ACL and MCL in 2024, and then he got an ankle injury last season during the game vs. Florida. Both things are substantial setbacks for a running back, and neither injury was fully behind him.

Moss was an All-SEC running back who finished his collegiate career at Texas A&M with 1,767 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 24 receptions for 236 yards across 32 games.

The financial scene for college athletes has shifted quite a lot, and players who built earnings through NIL arrangements are no longer just dependent on NFL contracts for financial stability.

Per the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, Moss will be required to return “most or all” of that $258,000 guaranteed in his contract.

But the Miami Dolphins backfield is pretty deep, featuring explosive pieces such as Jaylen Wright, Ollie Gordon, and Donovan Edwards.

Moss’s exit leaves Miami with one fewer player in a spot of need, but the Dolphins' bigger offensive identity this offseason doesn’t really connect with the running back group, not at all.

The Miami Dolphins build their offense around Malik Willis

The team is putting together its 2026 offense around quarterback Malik Willis, a player valued for his ability to create plays under pressure.

Passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo addressed the offensive approach on Tuesday.

"You want to help them presnap with everything so they can see as much as they can see," Patullo said in the team's official media availability.

Over three starts with the Packers, he managed to complete 80 percent of his passes for 612 yards and three touchdowns, and also grabbed 174 rushing yards plus three scores on 21 carries.

Willis signed with Miami after two seasons in Green Bay, where he never really got a sustained starting chance.

The Dolphins figure that Slowik, who helped shape the Houston Texans' high-powered attack around C.J. Stroud in 2023, can repeat that playbook for Willis in Miami.
