Turmoil in New York as Jets Fire DC Steve Wilks After Embarrassing Jaguars Defeat

Dec 16, 2025, 4:30 PM CUT

The New York Jets head coach, Aaron Glenn, made a tough decision regarding Steve Wilks after suffering a humiliating loss against the Jaguars.

New York’s defensive coordinator, Steve Wilks, has been fired, following their season-worst performance in a 48-20 defeat to Jacksonville this week. Glenn announced the decision on Monday morning, stating he had to make some tough changes for the team’s betterment.

"I thought it was time to make a change. I'm going to make the decision that's best for this organization at all times," the Jets’ head coach said.

However, the decision to release Wilks from his duties didn’t come overnight. The Jets have struggled defensively this season after trading Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner. It’s been shocking that the Jets haven’t even recorded a single interception yet.

Glenn’s team has conceded 43 touchdowns and ranks 31st in sacks with just 22. The Jets are already out with a 3-11 record and thus sit last in the AFC East. With Wilks now fired, the only question that remains is who will take his place for the rest of the season.

Who Will Replace Steve Wilks?

Although Wilks’ firing came ‌late in the season, the Jets still have three games to play, against the Saints, Bills, and the Patriots.

Head Coach Aaron Glenn said Chris Harris will serve as interim defensive coordinator for the final three games. He has 12 years of coaching experience, working with the Tennessee Titans as the CB coach and with the Washington Commanders’ defensive back coach.

It’s safe to say that Harris will stay with the Jets in the 2026 NFL season, considering all things go well in the remaining games. The Jets’ offense must improve and sustain drives to give the defense needed breathing room. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
