Tua Tagovailoa faces uphill climb after hurting his credibility with Dolphins, claims ex-NFL star
For Tua Tagovailoa, this off-season is a precarious point. The former Miami Dolphins quarterback is vying for the starting quarterback position in the Altanta Falcons but his past performances are proving to a hurdle.
“I was told he’s been really accurate. So that does help his cause, but Pennix, they have not given up on him either,” Jason McCourty said. “This could be a situation where he can ease his way back in. Maybe two is a bit of a stop gap option for them. They can go multiple ways here.”
McCourty, the Super Bowl LIII champion, broke down the competition between Tagovailoa and Michael Penix. He shared what an insider source told about Tagovailoa’s growth in the Falcons OTAs.
The Dolphins released the 28-year-old played in March 2026, ending his six-year tenure with them. His performance in the last season was deeply underwhelming and Tagovailoa took onus of it.
He acknowledged his shortcomings in his farewell message, before signing a one-year, $1.215 million minimum “prove it” contract.
“I also carry deep regret that I couldn’t get the job done and bring a championship home to this city. Miami deserves that, and I’ll always wish I could have delivered it for you,” he posted on his Instagram.
Tagovailoa recorded 2,660 passing yards for 20 passing touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2025. The Dolphins also parted ways with their former head coach, Mike McDaniel. Despite last season’s performance, McCourty has high hopes from Tagovailoa.
Jason McCourty On Tua Tagovalia’s Strengths
In a conversation with the NFL Live crew, Jason McCourty pointed out what Tua Tagovailoa offers the Atlanta Falcons.
“I also think what Tua is really good at, what Mike McDaniel was able to do in Miami, get the quarterback under center, going play action, hitting his back foot, and knowing exactly where to go with the football,” the former New England Patriots DE said. “He is an a very accurate quarterback, but also his ability to anticipate the route. That's what makes him special.”
In 2022, Tagovailoa led the NFL in passer rating and finished ninth in MVP voting. In 2023, he was once again a leader in passing yards and led the Dolphins to an 11-6 record. The quarterback showed commendable performance in his early games and is determined to repeat it.
