Todd Monken’s Old Comments Resurface As Brendan Sorsby Makes NFL Decision
The Cleveland Browns’ decision regarding quarterback prospect Brendan Sorsby has drawn renewed attention to comments made by head coach Todd Monken a few weeks back.
Speculation swirled about whether Cleveland would pursue Sorsby through the NFL supplemental draft. However, Monken has made it clear that he is not enthusiastic about the possibility.
“Not at all. I mean, that’s not even come across my desk,” said Monken, per sports journalist Camryn Justice. “I don’t think we’re in a position to want to go down that road. That's my opinion, that's not Andrews. I think that’s a slippery slope when you go down that, irrespective of talent. We all know what it is. He put himself in that situation.”
Sorsby, who received an injunction in his favor and was allowed to play for Texas Tech this season, mutually parted ways with the program.
Now, the young QB has filed for the NFL Supplemental Draft. And even though the Browns have three QBs, they obviously need another.
However, per Monken, there's no such plan for now.
"We've seen in other sports with players that have been banned for life from playing in professional sports. I think that's a slippery slope to go down that road," Monken said. "From my end of it, kind of a tough angle to go down that road and think that that's going to be your franchise quarterback if he's ever eligible to even play in the NFL."
In the Supplemental Draft, the teams are divided into three tiers according to their performance last year. And Cleveland has had some success in that in the past.
The Browns drafted Bernie Kosar first overall in the 1985 NFL Supplemental Draft. Kosar led them to five back-to-back playoff appearances from 1985 to 1989.
Another player they drafted was Josh Gordon in the second round, first overall in 2012. He played for four and a half years with the franchise before being traded to the New England Patriots in 2018.
Whether the Browns consider Sorsby seriously or not, Monken’s comments made it clear that the selection would carry major risk and doubt beyond his talent.
Meanwhile, an NFL insider believes that the debate over who should start for the Browns has only intensified after the mandatory minicamp.
NFL Insider Explains Why Deshaun Watson Has Not Secured Browns' Starting Job
During the mandatory minicamp for the Browns, everyone was keen on watching the battle for the QB1 role between Deshaun Watson and Shadeur Sanders.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Monday spoke on the situation and as to why the Browns could not name Watson as the starter.
“I still think Deshaun Watson is pretty well positioned here, but I do believe Shedeur had a good enough spring where he closed the gap some,” said Fowler, per AtoZ Sports.
Last week, Monken too had praised Sanders for his improvement in vital areas of the game while also mentioning that Sanders could still be very important to the team.
“His ability to process quicker and get the ball out of his hands and eliminate lost yardage plays is going to be huge for us to be able to stack plays and score, which is ultimately the number one thing here,” said Monken.
Sanders didn’t have a great rookie season as he threw 10 interceptions in 7 starts, but did throw for 7 touchdowns. Meanwhile, the team’s record with Sanders was also better at 3-4.
After a disappointing season with a record of 5-12, Cleveland will be hoping to move forward and improve its record. However, the debate over the starting quarterback role is bound to continue for a while.
