The Cleveland Browns' quarterback decision has created plenty of controversy. Todd Monken has faced plenty of criticism for choosing Deshaun Watson over Shedeur Sanders.

However, Spencer German of 92.3 The Fan believes Monken has handled the situation better than most expected. Rather than dismissing the frustration from Browns fans, Monken has acknowledged it while standing by his decision.

"I think Todd's actually come out looking like the best in all this because, other than that, the decision itself, because, like, I don't— he didn't invalidate the fans' feelings. He didn't say your feelings don't matter. His, his whole thing was Fans are allowed to boo us if we stink, right? Like, that's what he said. He told Deshaun, was like, the way you make this go away is you go play good football, and then it'll go away. Like, he knows the score. He knows what it's going to take. So he's not telling the fans, hey, don't boo us. He's just saying, I can't let that impact my decision. And he's right, it shouldn't impact his decision."

Monken sticking to his guns is certainly commendable. However, he will have to hope this decision doesn't backfire.

Todd Monken will need Shedeur Sanders to step up if Deshaun Watson fails

Shedeur Sanders has been named QB2 for the Browns. That makes him the obvious option if Watson fails to deliver.

The Deshaun Watson experiment is likely to get around four weeks to prove itself. Cleveland will need to see enough from its veteran quarterback during that stretch.

If Watson struggles and the Browns stumble out of the gate, Sanders could quickly be asked to take over. The rookie would then inherit a team that may already be fighting to recover.

For now, Monken has made his choice. The real question is whether it will be too late to salvage the season by the time he is forced to reconsider it.
