Cleveland Browns radio host Ken Carman has questioned Todd Monken’s claim about Deshaun Watson’s film.

Monken said he prefers to judge his players based on what he sees now. He also said he has not really watched Watson’s previous film with Cleveland.

Speaking on The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima on 92.3 The Fan, Carman offered a different view:

“I’m sure there’s some generalizing going on here. I’m sure he watched some tape. But he said what he said.”

Carman believes Monken would have studied the Browns’ quarterbacks before taking the job. He pointed to Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, who both had films from the previous season.

“And I imagine one of those things would have been Shedeur [Sanders], maybe even Dillon Gabriel. They both put stuff on film last year. You’d love to get an offensive-minded head coach.”

Carman then explained why Watson’s situation stood out to him. The quarterback remained under contract when Monken interviewed for the position. Watson had also shown a much higher ceiling earlier in his career.

“But knowing that Deshaun Watson was still under contract, and that even though the team seems to have given up on Deshaun Watson, the ceiling for Watson, if we could all go back with our DeLoreans back in time.”

Carman believes that made Watson’s film worth studying.

Watson has struggled with injuries and consistency since joining Cleveland. However, he has also shown he can play at a high level.

Carman believes Monken could have found something useful by studying that earlier work.

For now, Monken wants to judge Watson on his current performance. Carman, however, remains skeptical that the coach completely avoided Watson’s previous Cleveland tape.
