Todd Monken Responds to Deion Sanders’ Request and Drops Shedeur Sanders Nugget

With the Browns QB1 competition heating up between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson, head coach Todd Monken expressed interest in meeting up with Sanders Sr.

Shedeur Sanders’ father, Deion Sanders, on his recent appearance on “The Barbershop” show with Garrett Bush, had made an appeal to meet up with Monken to discuss how to get more from his son, who’s locked in the QB1 battle.

“I can’t wait. I’ve got a lot of respect for Coach Sanders, obviously as a player but also for what he’s done as a coach. He’s done a great job with Shedeur as a father,” replied Monken to the reporters on Wednesday morning.

Sanders had recently said that he wants to meet Monken “as a coach, not as a dad” about Shedeur, who heads into his second NFL season with the Browns.

Monken added, “I’m open to any time he wants to meet. He said he was going to come but he had a commercial. If he just tells me where the next commercial shoot is, I’ll be there. I really am looking forward to it.”

Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Sanders Sr. had earlier said that he’s been bothered by all the negative talk that’s targeted at his son ever since his NFL Draft. He believed that Monken is the right coach who’ll deal honestly and forthrightly with Shedeur.

James Carnes of the Buffaloes Wire shared that both coaches are focusing on Shedeur. The former Colorado quarterback is working to prove his worth, given the rocky rookie season he had.

The 24-year-old could only play eight games, of which seven had him as the starter QB. He went on to record 1,400 passing yards and only seven touchdowns against ten interceptions.

Deion Sanders concluded by saying that he could guide Monken on getting the most out of Sanders as he heads into his second NFL season, vying for the QB1 spot over Watson.

Sanders vs. Watson: The Quarterback Battle Monken is Deeply Involved in

Sanders has been in a quarterback battle with Deshaun Watson throughout practices during the offseason.

Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reported that Sanders had taken more of the reps during the Browns’ recent OTAs.

Easterling added that Monken has hoped to announce the QB1 before the training camp. However, given the “neck-and-neck” competition between the two QBs, it’s getting tough for the coach to choose a pick.

“In a perfect world, you’d love to have your starting quarterback and you’d love to have your offensive line set,” said Monken. “Every day, I lean one way or the other with the QBs.”

Monken concluded by saying that the Browns have got two starting-level quarterbacks and hopes to announce his pick at least before the Browns' week 1 game of the 2026 season.
