Todd Monken Issues Clarification on Browns Move Hours After Jim Schwartz's Unexpected Exit

Feb 7, 2026, 8:20 AM CUT

The man behind the Cleveland Browns’ defensive success, their DC, Jim Schwartz, is leaving them after 3 years.

During his opening press conference, the Browns’ new head coach, Todd Monken, spoke about his defense.

"We’re gonna keep the same system. … I didn’t take this job because of Jim Schwartz. … When I was preparing for the Cleveland Browns, I wasn't trying to chip Jim Schwartz. I was chipping Myles Garrett."

Despite Monken’s words, Schwartz had a big hand in taking Cleveland’s defense where it is today. Taking the last season into consideration, veteran defensive end Myles Garrett broke the all-time sack record held by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt, recording 23 sacks.

The Browns ranked 4th in total yards per game allowed with 283.6. Schwartz even had players’ backing during his tenure. Garrett wanted him to become the head coach, but when Monken arrived, he expressed his disappointment with a cryptic post.

While Schwartz sent his resignation now, it’s no secret that the writing was on the wall.

Browns' Rookie LB Carson Schwesinger Reacts to Jim Schwartz's Exit

Carson Schwesinger was one of the top defenders who truly developed under Jim Schwartz.

While talking about his exit on Kay Adams' show, the 22-year-old shared his time as a rookie under him.

"I loved playing for Schwartz. It's a great opportunity for me, and I loved the belief he showed in me," Carson said. "I know whatever he does, you know, he's been instrumental, especially in the first year I had."

In his rookie season, Schwesinger took the league by storm. He recorded 67 solo tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a couple of interceptions.

The 22-year-old even won the rookie defender of the year award for his performance for the Browns. Now that Schwartz is out, it will be interesting to see the difference in his approach next season.
