Todd Monken Gets Stern Warning on Offensive Line After Free Agency Moves
Cleveland Browns’ new head coach Todd Monken has an uphill task reforming his offensive line, and analyst Mary Kay Cabot's comments may add to his headache.
Browns’ insider Cabot appeared on the Brown and Orange Talk podcast recently and urged Monken to look at other options in free agency before staying with Dawand Jones. The 24-year-old offensive tackle was picked in 2023 but has been lackluster since then.
“I really do think so (the Browns being interested in Dawand Jones), but when you (Jones) have trouble staying healthy, and it's not anybody's fault, sometimes, you just need to go in another direction."
In the past three seasons, Jones played in 24 games and started in 20. He neither scored a touchdown nor an interception. More importantly, he has sustained injuries in each season.
In 2025, he suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Green Bay Packers. In the 2024 season, he fractured his leg and was sidelined for 10 games.
And in his rookie season, he sustained a torn MCL. This history validates Cabot’s concern about the lack of stable, healthy linemen, especially as the Browns have consistently lost due to their offensive unit.
Cabot further questioned Dawand's place in the team.
“The opening for Dawand is at left tackle, and he doesn't feel overly comfortable there, and he hasn't played a lot of football in the last couple of years.”
In such a situation where the team cannot rely on Dawand, Cabot thinks Monken should go for another player.
Monken Should Bring In Another Player to Better Adapt to the New Changes
With the arrival of Tytus Howard, Dawand's position in the team becomes weaker as he played in the same role as Howard in the 2026 season.
As he becomes surplus to the Browns' needs, Cabot thinks it is better that Monken and the team look at more options at left tackle.
“I think you have to move forward. I think you have to head into the 2026 season with another starting option at left tackle. It's too important of a position, especially in today's game,” she added.
To make matters worse, the Browns have also recently let go of three offensive players. ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi believes the team will fill its glaring left tackle position with two draft picks from the first round.
