Todd Monken Crushes Deshaun Watson Update With Latest Statement

The Cleveland Browns' quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders and Dillion Gabriel, are competing for the Browns' QB1 spot. However, the Browns’ new HC, Todd Monken is assessing the players and taking control of the media speculations.

During an interview on 92.3 The Fan’s Podcast, Monken doubled down on his plan on May 1. He hopes to have the QB order sorted by the time their mandatory minicamps are completed by 11th June.

“Well, I would love to have that,” Monken said. “I’m not there yet. We’ve been on the field for three practices, which was awesome. What I’ve seen after those three days gives me a view of what we’re at, but that can change once we’re back on the field in four weeks. We’ll have a better idea of that then.”

Mary Kay Cabot, Browns’ longtime reporter, recently reported on X that Deshaun Watson has the inside track to win the starting job. The news received mixed reactions from fans and an outburst from Shedeur Sanders' brother, Shilo.

Monken clarified during the interview that the Browns haven’t yet made a final call on who will start the game.

Monken, who was hired in January, also took into consideration his connection with the Browns’ player. He said that the players are 'external' to him and emphasized that their on-field performances are the best way to know the players better.

Monken expects that by the end of their mandatory minicamp (June 9-June 11), he will have an idea on who has the potential to lead the QB1 battle: Watson, Sanders or Gabriel.

The weeks ahead will paint a clearer picture of who truly has the edge to become the Browns’ new QB1. Amdist all the starting quarterback murmurs, Monken seems optimistic with his latest QB draft pick.

Monken’s Future Plans With The Rookie QB

The Cleveland Browns selected Taylen Green as the 182nd pick in the sixth round of this year's draft. Despite being added to a stacked quarterback room, Todd Monken revealed his plans for the rookie.

“In the sixth round, there was already enough to like about Green. His character, work ethic, athleticism, how far he’s come as a thrower,” said Monken on 92.3 The Fan Show. “Now lets see where he’s at in terms of command of the offense, command of what skillset he has that is his power.”

Given the arm strength, accuracy and the running ability Green comes with, Monken is yet to see what he offers as a complete player. During his two-year stint with the Arkansas Razorbacks, he threw for 5,868 yards and 50 total touchdowns.

The Browns are going to assess Green’s play style during their practices in June and create a game plan for him in the upcoming season.
