3 overpaid Browns players taking up the highest percent of Cleveland’s salary cap

The Cleveland Browns aren't just dealing with Deshaun Watson's infamous $230 million deal. Their salary cap headaches run much deeper. While Watson's contract is widely viewed as one of the NFL's worst, he's far from alone.

According to Ernesto Cova of Dawgs Pound Daily, two more Browns contracts deserve just as much scrutiny.

Tyson Campbell: $14.1M/year (12th among CBs)

The Browns brought in Tyson Campbell to replace Greg Newsome II. Initially, the front office thought that they were landing a younger long-term option at a lower price point than a Newsome extension would've cost. But reality hit them harder.

As per Ernesto Cova of Dawgs Pound Daily, Campbell isn't operating at an elite level despite cashing an elite-tier check.

He allowed three touchdowns and 11.7 yards per completion across 12 games last season. While those numbers aren't terrible, they still aren't good enough.

He's being paid like a top-15 cornerback, but his performance hasn't matched the paycheck.

Zion Johnson: $18.8M/year (7th among left guards)

Cleveland moved quickly to lock up Johnson after seeing Joel Bitonio inch closer to retirement.

The front office viewed Johnson as their left guard of the future. While that made sense, the price tag is where the concerns begin.

Andrew Berry committed nearly $19 million annually to him, but Ernesto Cova believes that the Browns could have acquired him for a much lower amount.

“Of course, we can't judge Johnson until he actually takes the field, but at first glance, this looks like a massive overpay,” wrote Cova.

Cova expressed that Johnson failed to establish himself as a guard with the Chargers, but there is a chance that could change in Cleveland.

Deshaun Watson: $46M/year (13th among QBs)

Lastly, there's Deshaun Watson's fully guaranteed $230 million deal with the Browns. Touted as the "worst contract in the league," Watson has been highly inconsistent despite his massive payday.

The last good season Watson had was back in 2020, when he played for the Houston Texans.

Despite that, as of July, Watson is outearning Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Aaron Rodgers, Caleb Williams, Bryce Young, Jayden Daniels, C.J. Stroud, Drake Maye, and Malik Willis.

Many believe 2026 will be the last season for Watson with the Browns, but it will also depend on how far Shedeur Sanders has developed.
