Todd Monken was asked if his players were 100% behind Watson. The Browns head coach insisted they were, but his response also carried an interesting caveat.

“Really, to be honest, I mean, they don't have a choice. I mean, this isn't a debate.”

Monken explained that players are responsible for doing their jobs, while the coaching staff decides who gives the team its best chance to win. For now, that means Watson remains the man under center despite the growing pressure surrounding the decision.

That could change quickly if Watson's performances continue at this level. Cleveland cannot afford to repeatedly struggle offensively while other options remain available.

Todd Monken May Have to Change His Tune Soon for the Browns to Succeed

Monken has remained adamant that naming Watson QB1 was the correct decision. However, that stance could become increasingly difficult to defend if the quarterback cannot produce better results.

There has already been speculation that the Browns could reconsider their decision as early as Week 4. Shedeur Sanders remains waiting in the wings, giving Monken another option if Watson fails to turn things around.

The bigger question is whether Cleveland can afford to wait that long. If Watson continues struggling, every additional game could make the Browns' path forward even more difficult.
