Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce face backlash over Adam Sandler officiating wedding
To make their wedding all the more special, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce made some specific choices. The couple did not have a maid of honor, for example, and asked their actor friend Adam Sandler to officiate their wedding.
“Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are officially married. Swift’s brother, Austin, acted as her “man of honor,” while Kelce’s brother, Jason, was his best man, according to a representative for the pop star. The ceremony was officiated by Adam Sandler,” The New York Times wrote in an X post.
The actor-comedian officiated the wedding held at Madison Square Garden on July 3, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the couple. While the choice might’ve appeared odd at first glance, Sandler holds a special place in both Swift and Kelce’s lives.
While Sandler, 59, has been a friend of Swift and a fan of her music for years, he became important to Kelce much later in life. It all happened on the set of Sandler’s movie Happy Gilmore 2.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end made a cameo in the movie in an experience he would not forget. While talking to Pat McAfee, he talked about all the fun he had with Sandler while filming.
“Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain,” he said on the Pat McAfee Show earlier this year. “He’s every bit as cool off the screen as he is on the screen, and that was a dream come true.”
The admiration goes both ways. Sandler also shared what it was like working with Kelce, calling him “gentle” and a “great actor.”
“He's like the guys I grew up with,” the actor told Entertainment Tonight. “When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school.”
Sandler led the couple through their vows in front of the couple’s many celebrity friends in the grand affair. While the two made their choice, it has left fans deeply unimpressed.
Fans express unhappiness over Adam Sandler as the Taylor-Travis wedding officiant
Under the New York Times’ X post, comments flooded in criticizing the many moves of the wedding.
“A pop superstar, an NFL champion, a brother as 'man of honor,' and Adam Sandler officiating. 2026 is not a serious year. (laughing emoji),” one comment read about the unconventional choices of the wedding.
Since Swift does not have a sister who would’ve taken the role of maid of honor, her younger brother Austin served as the “man of honor.”
There were questions on arrangements made in the lavish wedding over the important role of wedding officiant.
“All that money and Adam Sandler officiated? And not the pope? Or ny cardinal?” one asked.
“The ceremony was officiated by Adam Sandler. Now y’all just f****** with us,” another replied to the post.
“Being a joke, having Adam officiate sounds perfect,” one comment read.
“So many great women to officiate and it's a comedian? (teary eyed emoji),” another asked about the choice.
One fan wrote that even the actor had a hard time believing his role.
“Even Sandler doesn’t believe that…” they replied.
