Steelers Expected to Pursue $6M QB As Aaron Rodgers' Successor, claims Reporter

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering the second year with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. However, plans for a successor have been underway, as Rodgers, at 42, may be in the final stages of his career.

Reportedly, the Steelers have a unique prospect at hand with the controversial QB Brendan Sorsby via the NFL Supplemental Draft. Noah Strackbein of "All Steelers Talk" believes Pittsburgh is expected to show interest in Sorsby and could emerge as one of the more aggressive teams pursuing him.

“They’re (the Pittsburgh Steelers) going to look at Brendan Sorsby, they’re going to look at the situation and they’re going to deem he’s fine and that they are ready to give him an opportunity,” said Strackbein.

“...And when it all settles, whether he ends up in Pittsburgh or not, it's going to be revealed that the Pittsburgh Steelers offered at least a second-round pick for Sorsby," added Strackbein.

Vasquez added that Sorsby was once viewed as the top QB prospect of the 2027 NFL Draft. He also bagged the largest NIL contract in college history, a $6 million deal with Texas Tech.

However, after admitting to placing b*** worth nearly $90,000, the 22-year-old lost his NCAA eligibility and will now enter the league through the Supplemental Draft.

While Sorsby has emerged as one possible long-term option, he is not the only quarterback being linked to Pittsburgh's post-Rodgers plans.

Steelers Could Explore Other Long-Term QB Options

With Rodgers confirming the 2026 season to be his final NFL season, an NFL insider suggested a prospect the Steelers can turn to.

“The Steelers would be a perfect fit for Bucs QB Baker Mayfield if he departs in free agency next offseason,” shared NBC Sports’ Mike Florio.

Alex Worth of talkSPORT shared that Mayfield has one year left on his three-year and $100 million extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While the QB has expressed his desire to stay in Tampa, differences in Mayfield’s contract negotiations may make him explore other options in the league.

In 2023, Mayfield scored his career-high record at 4,044 passing yards for 28 touchdowns after succeeding NFL legend Tom Brady. He also led the Buccaneers to the playoffs in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Whether Pittsburgh ultimately lands Mayfield or Sorsby remains to be seen. However, Strackbein believes the Steelers are likely to be among the teams seriously evaluating Sorsby as they search for a long-term successor to Rodgers.
