Star Browns Linebacker Calls It Quits After 9 NFL Season Career

On Thursday, former Browns linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. announced his retirement after nine seasons in the league.
“Thank you football for 26 years of blood, sweat, and tears,” Walker said in an Instagram post. “Next chapter will be even better.”
Walker was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2017. He was the 161st overall pick in the fifth round. After spending the first four seasons of his career with the Colts, the free agent signed with the Browns in March 2021.
In the 28 games he played for the Browns between 2021 and 2023, Walker made 170 tackles, out of which 97 were solo. The Browns had found a reliable player in him.
In 2022, which was Walker’s career low, he made 13 tackles in seven games before he sustained a torn quad tendon. He was placed on Injured Reserve in 2024 following a knee injury. He eventually joined the Miami Dolphins in 2024 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025, but couldn't find time to play last year.
Walker had a relatively short but rewarding career in the pro league.
The former linebacker, a Northwestern alum, was not expected to be a starter. But he made his worth in the league known alongside star Colts LB Shaquille Leonard by posting 105 total tackles.
In his nine seasons, Walker started 83 games and made 362 solo tackles and caught four interceptions. He racked up 26 tackles for loss and made 5.5 sacks. Walker made more than 100 tackles in three of his nine seasons in the NFL.
Although he has parted ways with football for good, his time with the Browns will be remembered fondly.
Walker Made an Impact Within the Community Off-Filed
The 31-year-old left a lasting impression on the Browns community. The team named Walker as their nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award in 2023. One of the most prestigious awards, it recognizes a player’s impact on the community off-field.
He was an important figure in ‘Stay In The Game!’, a flagship program by the Cleveland Browns Foundation. The program worked for children affected by chronic absenteeism in school.
Walker contributed by hosting an event for the students of the Shaker Heights Middle School. He distributed over 100 backpacks and school supplies to students and treated the students to ice cream later.
Walker also incorporated the elementary students’ designs in the cleats he wore in a game against the Denver Broncos. He offered students a Thanksgiving meal that year.
His impact reached beyond the stadium, and he’s gearing up for a new chapter in his life. What are your thoughts on Walker? Tell us in the comments.
