“Slippery Slope”: Todd Monken Sends Strong Message Over Potential Brendan Sorsby Move

Following the Myles Garrett trade, the Browns could be presented with a unique opportunity to resolve their quarterback situation for the 2027 season.

After the Texas Tech QB, Brendan Sorsby, lost his college eligibility for b******  on college football, it’s been speculated that he would enter through the NFL’s supplemental draft. When asked about the Browns’ interest in Sorsby, head coach Todd Monken had a stern reply.

“I don’t think we’re in that position to go down that road…. I like the quarterbacks that we have,” said Monken to Daryl Ruiter of the 92.3 The Fan Show on Monday. “I think that’s a slippery slope when you go down that path, irrespective of talent, in terms of the situation he’s put himself in. We all know what that is.”

Monken noted how in other sports, players have been banned for life from playing in professional sports for things Sorsby is alleged to have done.

Monken further added, “That’s a question for Andrew and the management. But from my end of it, kind of a tough angle to go down the road and think that’s going to be your franchise quarterback - if he’s ever eligible to even play in the NFL.”

Mike Battaglino of the Browns Nation reported that Sorsby has recently been ruled ineligible to play by the NCAA after investigating his g******* case.

Per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Sorsby is currently in talks to get his college football eligibility temporarily reinstated. If the request is denied, he could go on to apply for the supplemental draft this summer.

Simmons added that there has been no indication by the NFL so far that could prevent Sorsby from playing at the pro level.

Battaglino concluded by saying that it’s possible that Monken doesn’t want to worry about adding a fifth QB into the mix. The Browns already have Deshaun Watson, 2025 picks Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, and rookie Taylen Green.

Todd Monken Breaks Silence on Cleveland’s QB Situation

Monken also addressed the quarterback situation in Cleveland. The race between Sanders and Watson for the QB1 spot has piqued the interest of fans and NFL insiders.

“I anticipate there still being competition. That doesn’t mean the reps will be equal. That’s the easiest way to put it,” said Monken. “I think we’re in a good place right now with our quarterback room. All of the guys that are in there are working hard, and I like the level of talent that we have in there.”

Per Browns’ insider, Mary Kay Cabot, noted that while Watson may appear to be in the lead, Monken is not rushing his decision. He wants the competition to continue before the Cleveland Browns officially announce their starting QB for 2026.
