Jonathon Cooper, the Denver Broncos linebacker, has pleaded not guilty over to misdemeanor domestic violence charges. He appeared in a Douglas County, Colorado courtroom on June 8.

“Cooper…will now have a motions hearing July 6 with the potential of a jury trial to start on July 22, according to court records. The Broncos are expected to open training camp in late July,” ESPN reported on June 8. 

According to the same report, Harvey Steinberg, his attorney said the defense is not planning to file a motion to dismiss the charges. Denver Post reported that they have requested a trial date “as early as possible,” to avoid conflict with his Cooper’s necessary attendance at training camp.

The Broncos had offered Cooper for a four-year, $60 million contract extension in 2024. He had attended the team’s offseason program this season and was present at June 4’s OTA practice too. 

The 28-year-old was arrested alongside his girlfriend, Fiegen, at 11:16 p.m. MT on that day by Parker Police. According to police records, the two got into an argument over cheating allegations, which turned into a physical altercation. 

ESPN reported that Fiegen was arrested “on the suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence with an additional charge of petty criminal mischief.”

Cooper appeared in the 23rd District Judicial Court the following morning and he was released on a personal recognizance bond that day. The Broncos have made a public statement on the incident.

“We are aware of the matter and gathering more information,” they told the Associated Press.

Cooper also issued a public statement following his arrest.

Jonathan Cooper Apologizes After His Arrest For Violent Conduct

Following his arrest, linebacker Jonathon Cooper issued an apology for his social media post in response to the altercation.

“I realize posting a bible. Quote right after something very serious happens does not mean everything is okay. I apologize to my family to my friends and my community … And so many others,” he posted on his Instagram stories. 

He was drafted by the Denver Broncos as the 239th pick overall in 2021. He has appeared in 81 games since then. So far in his career, Cooper racked up 266 tackles, he recorded 145 individually. He recorded up 31.5 sacks. 

He recorded two forced fumbles and returned three fumbles.
