Matthew Stafford remains locked in as the Rams' starting quarterback, but the battle behind him has taken a surprising twist. First-round rookie Ty Simpson is reportedly in danger of slipping behind Stetson Bennett in the QB2 race.

"The belief in league circles is that Stetson Bennett has the edge over Ty Simpson as the Rams QB2, per @JasonLaCanfora,” according to NFL insider Dov Kleiman X's post.

As per Sports Boom, league sources close to Rams HC Sean McVay told Jason La Canfora that the coach believes Stetson Bennett is capable of winning games if he's forced to take over under center.

On top of that, the Rams are looking to take it slow with Simpson, who had just one year as a starter in college.

Speaking of numbers, Bennett spent four years at Georgia, leading the Bulldogs to consecutive national championships while earning Offensive MVP honors in both title games.

Back in his college days, he completed 65.1% of his passes for 8,428 yards, 66 touchdowns, while adding 530 rushing yards

He has yet to appear in an NFL game, but the Rams could allow him to see action this season.

Meanwhile, Ty Simpson was the 13th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Across 31 games at Alabama, Simpson posted an 11-4 record, completing 63.9% of his passes for 3,948 yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

According to NFL Trade Rumors, he is expected to sign a fully guaranteed four-year, $25.41 million deal that includes a $14.94 million signing bonus and a fifth-year option.

However, that deal might have hit a snag after the recent development.

This development might not sit well with the Rams fanbase, as Bennett served as the third-string quarterback over the past two seasons in Los Angeles. That said, fans remain highly intrigued by the QB2 battle.

Fans react as Ty Simpson's QB2 hopes take a hit

One fan believes Simpson might not be the right fit for the Rams' QB2 role.

“Ty Simpson is a bust,” the comment read.

He might not be alone in that assessment. Joe Smith of Touchdown Wire, in his assessment, wrote, “It's also possible that Simpson isn't the talent the Rams thought they were getting.”

While Simpson has been questioned over his performances, one fan appeared intrigued by the competition.

“QB room competition heating up 👀,” the user said.

Another fan called out the Rams over the situation after the Rams surprised everyone by picking Simpson at No. 13.

“No way the Rams drafted ty Simpson in the 1st round and he is QB3.” the third comment said.

One fan also raised concerns about Simpson's situation.

“The fact that SB, a guy who is a low-end QB3, is as good as Ty Simpson, is not a good sign for Ty Simpson. It’s early, but this alone should put the Rams fans on bust alert,” the final comment read.
