As the Cleveland Browns' quarterback battle dominates the headlines, another intriguing storyline seems to be unfolding. Rookie QB Taylen Green is making a serious push for a roster spot, and one insider explains why he may have a real chance.

Recently, Sports Illustrated's NFL insider Nick Pedone revealed that an NFC North rival was highly interested in Green and would have drafted him had the Browns not taken him first. So, it seems unlikely that the rookie would be cut from the roster so soon.

“If they cut Green from the initial 53-man roster, he’d be exposed to waivers, and an AFC North team could have interest claiming him, which would effectively burn Cleveland’s sixth-round draft choice," Pedone wrote on July 27.

The Browns selected Taylen Green in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Although he's still unproven, his ceiling is hard to ignore. At 6-foot-7, his dual-threat ability gives him an edge Dillon Gabriel simply doesn't have.

In his July 27 SI report, Pedone noted that cutting Green after the preseason would expose him to waivers, allowing interested rivals to claim him. However, carrying four QBs within a 53-man roster isn't realistic or sustainable.

Thankfully, as the insider pointed out, the Browns general manager, Andrew Berry, is known for navigating such situations and might find a way.

“The good news for Browns fans is that general manager Andrew Berry has been masterful at executing preseason quarterback trades. Just an offseason ago, Kenny Pickett was acquired and traded away without ever playing a snap in a game for the Browns,” wrote Pedone.

While Nick Pedone believes the Browns will have to keep Green on the roster, another insider suggested his spot could still be under threat.

Another Sports Illustrated NFL insider, Daniel Fisher, begged to differ on Green's chances. He was convinced that no team will be willing to carry a fourth quarterback on its roster.

While there's league-wide buzz that the Browns could move on from Dillon Gabriel to free up a roster spot, the reality may be quite different.

“The Browns drafted Gabriel in the third round, and despite opinions that he was a bit of a reach, Cleveland may hesitate to cut a third-rounder without giving him another season to prove himself,” wrote Fisher.

So, if not Gabriel, then who? Well, this is where Taylen Green comes in. Fisher argues that although Green is phenomenal and athletic, he needs significant development, which the Browns might not be willing to invest in.

“He needs a lot of improvement in the passing game. If somehow the Browns can release Green and hide him on the practice squad to develop him this season, then that might be the way to go,” wrote Fisher.

The fate of the quarterbacks will be decided during training camp, and with it already underway, we might be closer to an answer than ever.
