Shedeur Sanders vs. Deshaun Watson Debate Continues as Browns Radio Host Shares Honest Thoughts
The Cleveland Browns have kicked off their three-day mandatory minicamp from June 9 to June 11. So, the spotlight on their ongoing QB1 competition between quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson shines brighter.
“I think this always made more sense. The longer you let this QB competition run, I’ve always felt that better chance Shedeur has to take it,” said Browns' radio host, Nick Wilson, on the 92.3 The Fan show.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler had revealed last month that Watson had the “leg up” over Sanders in the battle because of his experience. With Sanders catching up, Fowler said last night that he expects this to go into “preseason game action”.
Per Jon Conahan of the Sporting News, the Browns are stuck in the middle ground with their starting QBs. Watson made a comeback after nearly 1.5 years away due to an Achilles injury, but brings in his veteran experience and is in the final year of his contract.
Sanders has more potential due to his age, although he could start only seven games last season and is the preferred option of the fan base. Head coach Todd Monken’s decision is not an easy choice to make.
Monken said on Tuesday that the starting QB job won’t be decided after the mandatory minicamp, per ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi.
“They’ve both played well enough to earn the right to compete to start,” added Monken.
With Monken undecided on the Browns' QB1, Browns’ insider Mary Kay Cabot hinted on Monday that the competition could continue through the Browns’ first two games of the preseason: against the Bears on August 15 and the Bills on August 22.
Browns Employ Unique Approach to Evaluate QB1 Play
According to Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal, Monken had previously stated at the last OTAs that the Browns have “two starting-level quarterbacks” and are relying on film to assess their performances.
“I don’t think I will be. Each day that changes. We look at the film and then we assess that,” said Monken about having a confirmed quarterback depth chart by Thursday. “I think both of them are doing exactly what we’re asking them to do and competing like h***.”
Easterling shared that Monken, along with QB coach Mike Bajakian and offensive coordinator Travis Switzer, has given both QBs as many opportunities as possible to work with the No. 1 offense.
All Browns’ QBs are practising with GoPros on their heads to let the coaches and QBs rewind and see how they directed a play. Monken revealed that the audio also benefits in hearing QB’s checks at the line of scrimmage.
Monken concluded by saying that maintaining the progress made during OTAs will be the focus when the QBs return to training camp following the offseason break after June 11.
