Shedeur Sanders’ sophomore season in the NFL has raised more questions about his longevity with the Cleveland Browns than ever before. The quarterback is surrounded by trade talk, and the Dallas Cowboys have emerged as the brightest landing spot for him. 

“What type of offseason would it be if Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys weren’t linked to a polarizing, big-name player like Sanders?” Pro Football Talk wrote on July 1. “Jones could acquire Sanders for relatively cheap and give him the opportunity to develop behind Dak Prescott as the team’s long-term backup.” 

Sanders is once again fighting for the starting quarterback position, only this time against veteran QB Deshuan Watson. Last year in his rookie season, he was against Dillon Gabriel, his fellow 2026 draft pick. 

Sanders’ trials in the Browns don’t seem to slow down, and he could be on his way out of the team, even per the prediction. While the San Francisco 49ers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are options too, Jerry Jones’ Cowboys are at the top of this list. 

But why? The Pro Football article views Sanders, 24, as the right QB to back Dak Prescott. The Cowboys are caught up in a QB competition of their own, and picking Sanders might be their best and long-term solution. 

“Dallas traded a fourth-round pick for former 49ers No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance, and in the spring of 2025, it dealt a fifth-round pick for Joe Milton III,” the list read. “While Milton remains under contract, both quarterback experiments appear to have fallen short. Third time could be the charm.”

The Cowboys need to find Prescott, 34, a reliable and proven counterpart for him to fall back on. Since 2020, Prescott has missed 26 games due to injuries. The current backups, Lance and Milton, have not fared well. So, can Sanders prove to be a worthy trade?

“According to Sports Illustrated, the idea was raised by Pro Football & Sports Network analyst Cooper Kleinberg, who argued that Dallas could acquire Sanders at a reasonable price and develop him behind franchise quarterback Dak Prescott,” Complex wrote on July 5. 

In 2025, he led the Browns in passing yards with 1,400. The Cowboys could trade for him and have a Sanders play for them once again.

Can Shedeur Sanders follow in his father’s footsteps?

Deion Sanders had a dream run with the Dallas Cowboys. The Hall of Famer signed a “landmark” seven-year deal worth $35 million with the franchise in 1995.

“The possibility of Sanders landing in Dallas carries another layer because of his family ties to the franchise,” Complex wrote on July 5. “His father, Deion Sanders, remains one of the most recognizable players in Cowboys history.”

The defensive back won Super Bowl XXX, earned four Pro Bowl nods in the five years he played with the team. Deion’s son Shedeur is already a Pro Bowler. If he does end up at Dallas, will he enjoy glorious seasons like his father?
