Shedeur Sanders Pens Heartfelt Message After Ex-Colorado Teammate's Tragic Passing

Mar 5, 2026, 8:48 AM CUT

As the Colorado Buffaloes are still processing the untimely and tragic passing of their quarterback, Dominique Ponder, the team’s former QB Shedeur Sanders has shared his condolences for teammate and friend.

“God, please comfort the entire Ponder family during this difficult time. Dominiq was one of my favorites because of his passion, his heart and his willingness to go beyond what was asked. He will certainly be remembered, missed and remain in our thoughts and prayers.”

Ponder passed away earlier this week after he was involved in a single-car crash. The 23-year-old was a third-year sophomore from Opa Locka and later transferred from Bethune-Cookman to the Buffaloes. Ponder spent the final two seasons of his life with the Buffaloes and appeared in the last two games of the 2025 season.  He recorded two rushes and one pass attempt.

Over that time, Ponder and Sanders became good friends. There was even a clip of the two from Secret Santa. At the time, Sanders had gifted Ponder a trip to Bal Harbour.

Now, Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Buffaloes, also expressed sorrow over Ponder’s passing and was one of the first people to confirm his death.

“Dominiq was one of my favorites because of his passion, his heart and his willingness to go beyond what was asked. He will certainly be remembered, missed, and in our thoughts and prayers,” Coach Prime wrote.

The Colorado Buffalos Are Still Feeling the Aftermath Of the Loss

On Monday, practice wasn't about playing football, but reminiscing about their friend, from things like jumping a 10-foot fence to helping teammates with rehab.

Condolences poured in, as teammates went on to send tributes. Running back DeKalon Taylor said, "Almost like a boost of energy, like he was there with us. That's what it felt like."

Offensive lineman Yahya Attia added, "It's sad not being able to protect him [Ponder] off the field. I still don't really realize it -- I don't want to believe it yet."

Defensive back RJ Johnson concluded it perfectly. "That's what we have to do this season. Play for Dom."

Our thoughts are with Dominique Ponder's family.
