Shedeur Sanders Brushes Off Joel Bitonio's Retirement News in Blunt Message

Joel Bitonio, one of the most respected offensive linemen in Cleveland Browns history, recently announced his retirement, ending a decorated career that spanned more than a decade in the NFL. It was the kind of moment that invites reflection, symbolism, and the kind of narrative energy that surrounds generational transitions in professional sports.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders acknowledged it. And then he moved on in about two sentences.

"Yeah, I think we just focus on like going to practice, executing our job every day, and that's it," Sanders said, per the Cleveland Browns YouTube channel on June 12. "I don't really think we think about passing torches and that stuff. I think we think more about, all right, it's us now."

Short. Direct. And revealing in its own way.

Shedeur Sanders answers media questions at the end of the Browns mini camp in Berea on April 21, 2026.

Bitonio played 12 seasons (2014–2025), appearing in and starting all 178 regular-season games. A 7-time Pro Bowler and 2-time First-team All-Pro, he was one of the NFL’s most durable and consistent interior offensive linemen.

Sanders is not dismissing Bitonio's legacy. He is simply refusing to let the weight of it become a distraction.

Moreover, Sanders expanded on what the focus actually looks like day-to-day. In the same media session, he spoke about building chemistry with teammates, learning alongside fellow rookies, and creating an environment where communication drives performance.

And the rookie wide receivers, by Sanders' account, are adapting faster than expected.

“Those guys are really amazing. I think that seeing what they could do in their first year, first couple months, maybe, is really, really exciting.”

He is talking about the WRs drafted in 2026, which include Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion.

During the interview with Andrew Siciliano, he also cleared up the story behind the horse head gift he gave to Todd Monken.

Shedeur Sanders Breaks Down On The Infamous Horse Head Gift

Shedeur Sanders shared the story behind the horse head gift he gave head coach Todd Monken, a gesture that sparked conversations.

"When I was younger, my aunt, I think, extended family, okay, they shipped me, they they was in the horses, they shipped me a nice horse head, "said Sanders in the interview. "So I remember from my memories. I ain't even like horses like that, but I remember that gift, all right, that's a real cool gift."

Sanders gifted his head coach, Todd Monken, a porcelain horse head, which was compared to The Godfather, leading fans to wonder whether it carried deep significance. He explained that he simply thought it was cool and decided to buy one for both him and his coach.
