Seahawks’ Future Owners Get Harsh Reminder on Ditching Lumen Field Amid Sale Discussions
The Seattle Seahawks are up for sale 29 years after Paul Allen, the founder of Microsoft, bought the franchise. Lumen Field has remained the franchise’s home since, but will the new owners, whoever they might be, change that?
“@Seahawks’ next owners may want a new Lumen Field, which has low ticket rev and is nearing the NFL's replacement age (30),” reporter Paul Roberts posted on X. “But space is limited, stadiums are $$$ and this time, there's no threat of moving the team to get taxpayers to pay.”
In his report for the Seattle Times, Roberts weighed in on the dilemma the new franchise owners could face over the sports venue. Lumen Field, previously known as the Seahawks Stadium, opened on July 20, 2002.
When the Seahawks’ lease with the Washington State Public Stadium Authority expires in 2032, the stadium will be 30.
According to reports, at the 30 to 50 age mark, the NFL pushes to either remodel stadiums or even replace stadiums that are serviceable. However, the chances of the Seahawks playing at a new home ground are slim for many reasons.
The stadium was built for $430 million, and after the narrow victory in Referendum 48. Allen had asked whether state voters would pay for a new stadium to replace the Kingdome, which they did.
In return, he bought the franchise from the then-owner, Ken Behring, who wanted to take the team to California. That might not be the case this time around.
Public funding for a new stadium “would be a tough sell, given the cuts we’re having to make,” Jamie Pedersen, state Senate majority leader, said.
Moreover, Seattle does not offer a land parcel fit for a new, state-of-the-art football venue. Even if the new buyers want to build a stadium financed privately, “not going to happen real soon,” Craig Kinzer, a Seattle real estate veteran, said.
These circumstances give rise to a pressing question: What conditions does Lumen Field stand in?
Lumen Field Is Undergoing Renovations For A Major Sport Event
The ever-loyal Seattle Seahawks fans have ensured to sell out every home game since 2003. The stadium, according to Paul Roberts’ report, was the first to adopt innovative technology like field-level suites and “intimidating acoustics.”
Currently, the stadium is gearing up to host the 2026 FIFA games. The Washington State Public Stadium Authority, the public owners of the stadium, was allocated $19.5 million in the 2025 state budget to host the games.
Moreover, “Lumen has also kept current with $150 million in renovations,” Roberts wrote. That includes new video screens, more luxury suites, a powerful Wi-Fi system, sports bar makeovers, and a new sound system for concerts.
Lumen Field was once described as the “upper end of NFL stadiums” by Michael Ozanian, a senior sports reporter at CNBC. Will the venue remain home to the Seahawks? What do you think?
