Russell Wilson Issues Statement on Joining CBS After Announcing Retirement

Russel Wilson, the former NFL quarterback, called it quits after 14 years in the league. Yet, his love for football remains strong. He joined CBS Sports and shared a message on his first day in the studio.

“I'm just excited…” Russel said on June 4. “Playing the greatest game of all, people thought I could never do it to play 14 years and to have some amazing, amazing years…Seattle in particular. To be here on set, to be a partner of NFL today. I just think I love the game of football.”

On June 4, Wilson posted a video on X that was over three minutes, encapsulating his life in the past two decades, and announced his retirement. He captioned it “Thank You, Football. Love, #3.”

Wilson's 14-year journey took him through four franchises, from Seahawks dominance to a quiet exit. He was picked 75th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in 2012 and played for them till 2021. In these years, Wilson enjoyed some of the best seasons of his career and won the Super Bowl XLVIII.

He had a one-year stint with the Denver Broncos (2022-2023), the Pittsburgh Steelers (2024), and lastly the New York Giants (2025). Marred by significant injuries, the quarterback’s career saw a sharp decline towards the end.

He passed for 2,482 yards in 11 games and 831 yards in six games in the last two seasons, respectively. He suffered a Grade 2 hamstring tear early in 2025.

His 46,966 passing yards are the 16th highest of all time. Wilson exited the league as a two-time NFC Champion, a 10-time Pro Bowl honoree, and the 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year.

As Wilson takes on a new role with CBS Sports, Ciara, his wife, has penned a heartfelt message for him.

“greatest inspiration:” Ciara Celebrates Wilson's Next Chapter

Ciara, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, has been a constant support in Russell Wilson’s life. So when the quarterback announced his retirement, she was his biggest cheerleader.

“The best in the world! There’s only one, 3! Always so proud of you! It’s a true blessing to go on this journey with you! My greatest inspiration! I love you so much!” she commented under his latest Instagram post.

The over three-minute video posted on IG featured people from his personal and professional life. Apart from Ciara, he mentioned his former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.

“To Coach Carroll, thanks for taking a chance on the young 5’11 Black kid from Richmond, Virginia, who was told he was too small to ever make it in the NFL,” Wilson said.

After a 14-year-long career on the gridiron, Wilson will be on the other side, watching it with a mic in his hand. What was your favorite moment from his career? Tell us in the comments.
