On Monday morning, Texas visiting District Court judge Ken Curry granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA. He made quarterback Brendan Sorsby eligible to play football for the Texas Tech Red Raiders during the 2026 season. 

The LSU Tigers legend and Super Bowl champ, Tyrann Mathieu, chimed in with his opinion on the ruling.

“Can I return back to college football?” asked Mathieu on his X post. “I only played 2 seasons, should have 2 more eligibility years left.”

Per Grey Papke of Larry Brown Sports, Mathieu was previously dismissed from the Louisiana State University program after two years (2010-2011) due to a violation of team rules.

He entered the 2013 NFL Draft, won Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs and played 12 seasons in the league before retiring in 2025.

“Can you find me a judge in Louisiana who can see to it that Honey Badger gets to finish his last 2 years of college football? Who’s going to say no?” added Mathieu on his X post. 

Papke added that Mathieu is "presumably joking" about returning to LSU, where he earned his nickname “Honey Badger”, for his final two years of eligibility.

His claim was made in the light of a Texas judge allowing Texas Tech’s QB Sorsby to maintain his eligibility even after violating NCAA g******* rules.

Griffin McVeigh of On3 shared that Mathieu last stepped on a football field as a college student in the National Championship against the Crimson Tide of Alabama in 2011. Coach Les Miles kicked Mathieu off the team in 2012, who wore the program’s legendary No.7.

Instead of going back to LSU in 2013, Mathieu focused on the 2013 NFL Draft and got drafted in the third round by the Arizona Cardinals. He went on to play for the Houston Texans (2018), the Kansas City Chiefs (2019-2021) and finally with the New Orleans Saints (2022-2024).

Papke concluded by saying that Mathieu joins many others who find it unbelievable that Sorsby, who placed b*** on his own football team and a total of $90,000 worth of b*** over four years (per ESPN’s David Payne Purdum), would get to play due to a judge’s intervention.

The ruling has left college football teams contemplating whether to play against the Red Raiders.

NCAA Faces Legal Setback in Brendan Sorsby Case

Manuel Benally of KWTX-TV reported that the NCAA had earlier ruled Sorsby ineligible in May after he acknowledged placing b*** during his college days. He then completed a rehabilitation program in May. 

Judge Curry’s ruling came in Sorsby’s favor, stating that he has “demonstrated he will suffer a probable, imminent and irreparable injury” if the court didn’t issue a temporary injunction, as he won't be able to play on Texas Tech’s football team for 2026.

The NCAA, which rejected Texas Tech’s appeal to reinstate Sorsby on June 6, disagreed with the ruling and called it an outcome that “undermines and corrupts the integrity of sports”.

Benally concluded, stating that the injunction is effective immediately and will remain so until a final judgment is signed or until another court order is issued. The final trial is set for the week of 8 February, 2027.
