Report: Browns Looked Past Tyler Shough, Settled on Dillon Gabriel After Extensive QB Search

Cleveland Brown has spent another season at the bottom of the AFC North with a poor 4-12 record.

They have played with three different quarterbacks this season in Joe Flacco, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. However, according to the reports, Cleveland’s story would’ve been different if they had signed another rookie instead of Gabriel.

Zac Jackson from the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show revealed that, despite the buzz, Tyler Shough was never considered by the Browns’ QB. However, what they found even more astonishing was that after months of research, they had scouted Gabriel.

“Tyler Shough never made the final cut. They never considered him. They just thought he was too old, and he had holes in his game. That makes sense. But they had five months to do a quarterback search and zeroed in on Dillon Gabriel. It’s unbelievable.”

The Browns started this season with veteran Joe Flacco as their QB. However, he just played 4 games and scored a couple of touchdowns for 160 yards. Cleveland later traded him to the Bengals, with Dillon Gabriel replacing him.

Unfortunately, he also played 10 games this season, scoring 7 touchdowns for 937 yards. He got injured, and rookie Sanders got a chance to showcase his potential. In 7 starts, the 23-year-old has scored 7 touchdowns for 1289 passing yards. With Sanders developing gradually, Gabriel’s future in Cleveland looks bleak.

Kevin Stefanski and Dillon Gabriel both could say goodbye to the Browns

Before the 2025 season, it was the Browns' head coach, Kevin Stefanski, who wanted Dillon Gabriel as a third-round pick.

However, that experiment has failed miserably, with him getting sacked 19 times in 10 starts. Spencer German and Nick Pedone on 92.3 The Fan made a huge prediction about both Stefanski and Gabriel.

They stated that if the Browns do decide to move on from the two-time Coach of the Year winner, Gabriel’s days in Cleveland might be over as well. "If they do move on from Kevin (Stefanski), I think it's possible that we've seen Dillon Gabriel play his last game with the Browns."

Ahead of their last game against the Cincinnati Bengals, there’s a strong possibility of it becoming Stefanski’s last game as the coach.

With the rumor of him becoming the New York Giants’ new head coach, will we see Gabriel going out of the Browns as well? Let us know in the comments!
