“Paying More Taxes”: Browns Fans Divided Over Myles Garrett $204M Update After Rams Trade

Myles Garrett’s move to the Los Angeles Rams came with higher hopes for a Super Bowl win and also a contract adjustment. The new contract was reworked around the record-setting contract Garrett had made with the Browns last year.

The star pass-rusher is now set to make $204 million over the next five years. The contract includes a $35.7 million signing bonus running through 2038, per J R DeGroote of heavy.com. NFL insider Ian Rapoport shed more light on Garrett’s contract.

“The Rams and star edge Myles Garrett did not agree on a new deal. Instead, they did rework his contract that pays him $204M over five years - essentially what he was making,” posted Rapoport on X. “The average per year and term remain the same as his deal was in Cleveland.”

Rapoport further added that the alteration allowed the Rams to onboard Myles and his record-setting deal, moving the vesting gate of his guarantees back a few months.

Per Ricardo Sandoval of the Sporting News, the Rams reworked Garrett’s previous contract’s structure and adjusted the timing of the guarantees to a later time.

Sandoval added that the Rams needed more flexibility in their salary-cap planning. Pushing back the vesting dates on Garrett’s contract made it easier for them to afford the two-time Defensive Player of the Year’s salary.

Sandoval concluded by saying that, as the newest Rams member, Garrett neither received a pay cut nor did he get a raise. His overall deal was intact, just as Rapoport reported.

While the Rams made a statement by going “all in” on building the best roster for the Super Bowl with Garrett’s contract, many fans had mixed reactions to the financials involved in acquiring the star defensive end.

Fans React to Garrett’s $204 Million Contract Update With the Rams

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Garrett will make more this year, from $31.5 million to $37 million. However, the total remains the same as the Rams rework the bonuses.

Fans who added up that Garrett will either be making the same amount or less if taxes are taken into consideration. They expressed their thoughts under Rapoport’s post on X.

“But he’s paying more taxes than he was in Cleveland?” asked a fan.

“Taxes have to be higher in CA….so is he actually getting less?” asked another fan.

“But he’ll lose $20,000,000 a year now in CA taxes,” commented a fan.

A major section of the fans were concerned that Garrett would be settling for less, given the taxes and cost of living in LA in comparison with Ohio.

“So he essentially took a pay cut when you factor in the major tax difference in California,” stated one user.

Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Garrett’s increase in top tax rate goes from Ohio’s 3.125% to California’s 13.3%.

One fan had an optimistic take on this situation and commented, “Myles Garrett is still one of the most dominant players in football. The Rams clearly decided that he was worth the accounting headache.”
