Patrick Mahomes Makes Surprising Travis Kelce Claim with Chiefs' Tight End's Future Up in the Air
Travis Kelce's future with the Chiefs is up in the air. Just a few weeks ago, he was unsure about his future with the team, and now, the Chiefs' QB Patrick Mahomes has decided to talk about it.
Right after losing to the Texans, Patrick Mahomes made a statement about his teammate, explaining a lack of certainty.
"Every season I’ve had with him these last few years I’ve tried to cherish because you never know. He’s got himself in great shape this year, and he’s played great football. He’ll have the option to do whatever he wants to do after this season.”
The QB-tight end duo has troubled the NFL defenses since 2018, when Mahomes was given the starting job. But with the playoffs looking like a distant dream with a 6-7 record, will Kelce just give up? Well, Mahomes has an answer for that.
”But I know one thing, he’ll give everything he has throughout the rest of the season to try to give us a chance to make a playoff run. We know the chances are getting lower and lower, but I know the guys on this team are going to give everything they have every opportunity they get.”
The Kansas City Chiefs currently have a 12% chance of going to the playoffs. If they do not make it, it would be a career first for Patrick Mahomes. However, for the Chiefs and Kelce, it would be the first time in 11 seasons. But that doesn't take away from his achievements with the team.
He has been selected for 10 Pro Bowls and has won 3 championships. The TE has achieved almost everything, and now the fans couldn’t help but speculate about his retirement. Though we might have to wait till next season.
“'I'd like to make that decision before they've got to get draft picks and free agency opens to fill the roster appropriately. All that will be at the end of the season. I won't be thinking about it until then,” Kelce said back in November.
Will he stay? Well, if we want to understand that, let's see why Kelce returned after losing the Super Bowl.
When Travis Kelce Returned For Better
In the 2024-25 Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs lost 40-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles, with their offense shut down by a dominant Eagles' defense. Travis Kelce had a quiet game, catching only four passes for 39 yards. This came on the back of a poor season.
He recorded 823 yards and 3 TDs, marking one of his lowest‑production seasons in years. That is not how he wanted to retire.
"Got a real bad taste in my mouth with how I played in that last game and with how I got the guys ready for battle. I can't go out like that!!!!"
This season, he has 60 catches for 727 yards and has scored 5 touchdowns in 13 games. While he has fewer receptions so far, his yards per catch increased to around 12.2–12.5, compared to 8.5 in 2024. This means his catches are gaining more yardage and creating bigger plays. He is ahead of the 2024 self in TDs. Perhaps this is the ending that he wants.
Let us know what you think, will Travis Kelce stay or retire?
