Packers Emerge as Top Threat to Browns' Interest in Anthony Richardson Trade

One of the Cleveland Browns' quarterback targets might be picked up by one of their greatest rivals. NFL insider Stephen Holder believes Colts' Anthony Richardson is on his way to the Packers.

In an X post made on Saturday, Holder reported that Richardson is available through trade, but no deal has happened yet. According to the Colts expert and ESPN reporter, the Browns or any team interested in him should watch out for the Packers.

“Update on Colts QB Anthony Richardson, who is available via trade. No deal is imminent, per multiple sources. There are interested teams, but the dust is still settling from free agency. One particular team to monitor: the Green Bay Packers.”

In a reply thread under his original post, Holder further explained Richardson's situation. The quarterback has been told by the Colts to look for a new club.

Still a young prospect, Richardson would like to work with someone who develops quarterbacks, such as the Packers' head coach Matt LaFleur, Holder wrote.

The Cleveland Browns’ 2026 quarterback roster is still a point of contention among fans and experts. With Deshaun Watson returning from injury, Shedeur Sanders still learning, and Dillon Gabriel being unreliable, the team still needs competition.

At the 2026 NFL Combine, Browns head coach Todd Monken spoke about the need to instill a competitive spirit.

"Sure, I think it's an open competition... I don't mean that saying it harshly, but I don't think there's enough on film over the last couple years one way or the other to say, boy, we have our starter at quarterback yet."

Earlier last week, the Colts committed themselves to Daniel Jones in a record-setting two-year, $88 million contract. And with that, Richardson has become a free agent. He has started in 15 of his 17 games, contributing 2,400 yards and 11 touchdowns.

And the Browns' offense ranked 30th overall in the 2025 season, which ended with a 5-12 record. They would be in more trouble if the Packers steal Richardson right from under their nose.

But Would Richardson Accept Becoming Love’s Backup?

Even if Anthony Richardson goes to the Green Bay Packers, he would not be their starter quarterback.

With a 9-7-1 record and 2nd rank in the NFC North, the Packers have Jordan Love as their starter. In 2025, Love scored 23 touchdowns for 3,381 yards and threw six interceptions.

During their 27-18 win against the Cincinnati Bengals, Packers head coach LaFleur was asked about Richardson, and he was all praises about him.

"Yeah, I mean, like I said, none of these guys (quarterbacks) in this league are perfect, but I think he's (Love's) playing at a pretty high level."

On the flip side, Richardson's chances of starting for the Browns are much stronger. Both Sanders and Watson have been underwhelming, leaving management searching for a better player or backup.

Richardson also has the option to train under Monken, who has been a successful offensive coordinator in the past. Monken has developed players like Lamar Jackson, so that might be a deciding factor for Richardson to join the Browns.

Which team do you think Richardson should join? Let us know in the comments.
