NY Jets Cut $1.3M Signing 1 Week After Signing Him to Add 2nd Giants Kicker
Younghoe Koo is looking for a new home after a brief stint in New York. The franchise has released the placekicker in favor of another veteran.
The Jets had signed Koo, a free agent, with a one-year, $1.3 million contract just a week ago. However, on June 3, NFL insider Jordan Schultz posted that the franchise has released Koo.
“Sources: The #Jets informed K Younghoe Koo that he is being released,” his X post read.
According to reports, the Jets have replaced him with kicker Jason Sanders.
Koo, who moved to the U.S. at age 12, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2017.
He signed his first NFL contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. He then played for the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football in 2018 before returning to the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.
He played for the Falcons up until 2025 and was selected to the Pro Bowl during the 2020 season. He converted 37 of his 39 field-goal attempts and led the league. He also racked up 33-of-39 extra-point attempts.
Koo last played for the New York Giants in the 2025 season after the Falcons had released him. He then signed with the Jets this offseason.
“With the addition of Koo, the Jets now have three placekickers on the roster after having signed Cade York and Lenny Krieg,” the Jets announced on May 28.
In his eight-year career, Koo appeared in 98 games and made 185-of-217 field-goal attempts (85.3%) with a long of 59 yards, while converting 186-of-194 extra-point attempts.
He had been released without appearing in a game previously by the New England Patriots in 2019. He was released two weeks after they had signed him.
The New York Jets Sign Their Second Placekicker
After releasing Younghoe Koo, the New York Jets replaced him with Jason Sanders. The New York Giants had released him on June 2. Sanders was picked 229th overall in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins in the 2018 NFL Draft.
“The Jets have signed K Jason Sanders and waived WR Da'Quan Felton and K Younghoe Koo,” the Jets wrote in a press release on June 3.
He had played for the Dolphins from 2018 to 2024 and missed out the last season due to a hip injury.
A New Mexico talent, Sanders ranked No. 3 in the Dolphins’ history with 826 points. His 84.6% field-goal percentage is the highest (minimum 50 attempts) in team annals. His 221 field goals place him behind Olindo Mare.
He went All-Pro in 2020 when he set a Dolphins’ season record by making 92.3% of his field goals. In the 2024 season, he set a Dolphins franchise record by making 27 straight field-goal attempts.
