"Not Great Numbers" - Former Super Bowl Winner Delivers Blunt Verdict on Deshaun Watson Future
The Browns moved to 2-1 with a 21-18 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 3. Deshaun Watson delivered two touchdown passes, including the late score that put Cleveland ahead.
However, Watson finished with only 144 passing yards with 16 completions from 30 attempts. The performance prompted former Super Bowl winner T.J. Ward to question whether the quarterback had done enough to earn another contract.
While addressing the issue on Speakeasy, the former Browns safety acknowledged Watson's late-game contribution but remained critical of his overall numbers.
"You [Deshaun] passed for 144 yards—16 to 30 for 144 yards. Those are not great numbers from a quarterback. But he scored when the opportunity was needed, so I'll give him that. I'll give him the dub."
The show's host Emmanuel Acho then asked how many more games Cleveland should wait before giving Watson a new contract. Ward's response was blunt:
"I would never give him a new contract."
Ward's assessment left no doubt about where he stands on Deshaun Watson's future with the franchise.
Cleveland Browns Defense Emerging as Team's Biggest Strength
T.J. Ward also believes Cleveland's defense deserves much of the credit for the team's two-game winning streak.
The unit recorded three sacks and had an interception against Carolina. Ward praised the defense while also questioning the quality of Cleveland's recent opponents:
"But let's be real, this defense is on fire. This defense is the reason why they have the two wins they have."
Curiously, the former Browns safety also noted that five Carolina starters had missed the Week 3 matchup.
Cleveland now faces the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4.
