$97 Million Cowboys Star Faces Major Action from NFL Following Christmas Day Incident

The Cowboys might have had a great Christmas with a 30-23 win over the Washington Commanders on the 25th. But the star they signed for $97 million might have to spend some extra money now.

With 6:14 remaining in the second quarter, Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs brought down Washington Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt with a horse-collar tackle. Now he might be looking at a big fine.

The NFL has fined players from $12,000 all the way up to $23,000 for horse collar tackles this season. The rules state that a first offense is eligible for a fine of $17,389, while a second offense can result in a fine of $23,186.

Diggs violated Section 2, Article 16 of the NFL rulebook. It states, “no player shall grab the inside collar of the back or the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, or grab the jersey at the name plate or above, and pull the runner toward the ground.”

His foul even led to a score against the team. At the time, the Cowboys held a 21-3 lead with Washington in possession. The referee flagged Diggs with a 15-yard penalty, which gave the Commanders a first down. They ended the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run by Merritt.

This would not be the first time the NFL has fined Diggs this season. He had to pay a $17,389 fine for winging at and making contact with New York Jets wide receiver Arian Smith in their Week 5 matchup.

What future holds for the $97 Million Cowboys Star?

Diggs signed a five-year extension with the Cowboys worth $97 million in 2023, which means he is with the team until 2028, or is he?

After the first four games, the Cowboys played the next eight without Diggs, as he was on IR with a knee injury.

But he was "upset" with the team's decision to keep him inactive, and voiced those frustrations with them yesterday, saying "they know" when asked if he had any discourse with the team about their choice. And the team owner and GM, Jerry Jones, gave a public reply to that.

"When you looked at practice, we didn't like what we saw relative to his health and ability to make plays," he said. So this does raise the question of whether Diggs does have a future with the Cowboys?

"Yeah, possibly. If this is my last [home] game with the Cowboys, it’s tough," he said after the 34-17 loss to the Rams. He also said, "After the season, I guess we’ll figure it out."

What do you think will happen?
