Brendan Sorsby's fight with the NFL is far from over. After the league shut down his supplemental draft hopes, attorney Jeffrey Kessler fired back, saying they would challenge it. But the NFLPA may not deliver the lifeline Sorsby is looking for.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the NFLPA is quite uncertain about whether it will entertain Brendan Sorsby's case.

“A source close to the situation said the NFLPA has not made any determination on if, how, or whether there are legal grounds to act on this. Still many moving parts as Brendan Sorsby and his representatives evaluate options,” writes Pelissero in his X post.

That said, the NFLPA finds itself in a tricky position. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, even though Sorsby is not yet an NFLPA member, the union may still have grounds to challenge the NFL's decision.

They might argue that an apparently eligible player's application should have triggered a supplemental draft.

However, the situation is a bit complicated here. If Sorsby gets a roster spot, someone else will have to make way.

“By taking a stand for Sorsby, who is not currently in the union, the NFLPA could be impairing the employment of a current union member; if Sorsby gets a roster spot, someone else will be released,” writes Florio.

Well, if all else fails, Sorsby will either have to challenge the NFL directly in court. That said, the NFL did give him a suggestion and a lesson.

Through its letter, the league encouraged Sorsby to wait for next year's draft. Under the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, Sorsby cannot legally sign with a team yet.

Players only attain undrafted free agent status once the draft for which they are eligible has officially concluded.

“As Commissioner Goodell has emphasized, participation in the NFL is a privilege that carries with it significant responsibilities, including accountability,” the letter to Sorsby concluded, as per The Athletic. “By all accounts, you are a talented player with the potential for future success. We encourage you to focus on preparing for possible entry into the NFL through the 2027 NFL Annual Draft.”

Even though there was an active speculation that Sorsby could attract a second-round selection, the NFL first had to determine whether he qualified for a supplemental draft.

The league has not held a supplemental draft since 2023.

According to The Athletic journalists Jayna Bardahl and Dane Brugler, every applicant must undergo an approval review before the draft. The letter cited the late filing as well as inadequate reasoning behind their decision not to approve Sorsby's application.
