NFL MVP and Coach of the Year Preview, All You Need to Know Ahead of the Award Ceremony
Before the Super Bowl determines who’s better between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, the NFL Honors Night on February 5 will announce major winners from the 2025 season.
And if Patriots quarterback Drake Maye wins the MVP award or the Offensive Player of the Year award, it would surely boost his and the team’s morale for the big game.
He is up against reigning MVP Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, who is nominated again in the category.
Who Else Is Nominated for MVP
Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars is nominated alongside running back Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers and Matthew Stafford, the Los Angeles Rams’ QB.
Lawrence threw 29 touchdowns for 4,007 yards in a 13-4 season for the Jaguars. His team ranked No.1 in the AFC South before losing the Wild Card game to the Bills.
Meanwhile, the Bills qualified for a tough game against the Denver Broncos in the postseason, led by Josh Allen. Although the team couldn’t make it to the Super Bowl, again, they had a successful 12-5 season. Allen threw 25 touchdowns for 3,668 yards. The 29-year-old is currently recovering from a fractured leg.
Running back Christian McCaffery covered 1,202 yards and scored 10 touchdowns out of the 311 carries he made in 2025. Ranked second in the NFC West, the 49ers had a 12-5 record. The team is just behind the Seahawks and the Rams.
The Rams and Matthew Stafford had their second Super Bowl campaign in a decade. Stafford was exceptional this season. He threw a whopping 46 touchdowns and only eight interceptions for 4,707 yards. The 37-year-old is perhaps Maye’s toughest competition, who reinvented his career with the Rams.
With him leading them, the Rams had a 12-5 season and ranked 2nd in the NFC West. They lost their Super Bowl berth to the Seahawks in a 31-27 game.
Drake Maye threw the same number of interceptions as Stafford and scored 31 touchdowns. The 23-year-old covered 4,394 yards in the 2025 season and turned around the Patriots’ trajectory after two bad seasons.
Maye credited much of his and the team’s success to their new head coach, Mike Vrabel. The Patriots had recorded only eight wins when Vrabel took charge of the team. But within a year, the Patriots made it to the Super Bowl after recording a 14-3 season.
Reason Why Vrabel Is up for the Coach of the Year Award With Four Other
And opposite him is Mike Macdonald, the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Macdonald is 38 years old and the youngest head coach in the league.
Liam Coen of the Jacksonville Jaguars worked with one of the worst teams and pulled their ranks up in his first year. Which is why cornerback Greg Newsome II advocated for Coen and said, “For this to be his first year is unbelievable. I think he should win Coach of the Year.”
Ben Johnson, who coached the Chicago Bears, led the franchise to an 11-6 record and first division title amd post season victory since 2010. And he did that in his first season with the Bears, as their 18th coach.
San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan is on the list for winning 12 games this season after losing 17 players through free agency and “more than $152 million worth of players on a reserve list of some kind,” as reported by ESPN. And yet, the 49ers stunned.
The competition is tough, but only one is the best. Who do you think will take these awards home? Tell us your favorite in the comments below.
