NFL Fans Mourn Ex-Raiders Center's Sudden Demise

Back in 2003, right before Super Bowl XXXVII, the sudden disappearance of an Oakland Raiders player cast a shadow over the team’s eventual loss. Now, years later, that chilling memory has resurfaced in a far more heartbreaking way.
A shocking and devastating announcement has emerged about the former Oakland Raiders center. The 2002 Pro Bowler, Barrett Robbins, took his last breath on March 27, 2026, at 52, as per his former teammate Tim Brown’s post on X.
“It's with great regret i tell you i just received a call from Marissa Robbins informing me that Raiders All Pro center Barrett Robbins passed away overnight,” Brown said on X. “Thankfully, he passed peacefully in his sleep. Please pray for their girls, his family and tons of teammates who will be affected by this!”
Robbins is famously known for his disappearance before Super Bowl XXXVII. Having not taken his depression medication, he resurfaced the night before in Mexico.
The team lost that Lombardi trophy to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 48–21.
Former HC Bill Callahan intended to let Robbins play, but eventually ended up suspending him. After the incident, Robbins was treated for Bipolar Disorder in rehabilitation.
Months later, Robbins told HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel what had happened, according to him.
“I was out of my mind. I was out of control," Robbins said. "My life was unmanageable. I was completely living in a fantasy world. In my mind, we had already won the Super Bowl, and we were celebrating. That’s how delusional I was.”
More than two decades after that moment, the news of his passing has sent shockwaves across the fanbase, sparking an outpouring of reactions online.
Fans React to Barrett Robbins’ Life and Death
The incident of the Super Bowl wasn’t the first time something like that had happened.
Barrett Robbins was diagnosed with depression, and in 1996, he missed the game and was hospitalized for similar reasons.
Many comments acknowledged these struggles that Robbins faced.
"RIP Barret Robbins. A talented Raider who battled hard on and off the field. Prayers for his family and teammates. 🖤🙏," a comment read.
Though that Super Bowl incident would be difficult to erase from people's memory, some fans focused on the silver linings his incredible achievements.
"Rest in peace, Barret Robbins. 52 is way too young. U dominated the trenches, made the Pro Bowl, started in the Super Bowl…🙌" a user said.
For the Raiders fans, this loss felt personal. This showed in various comments.
"Heartbreaking. Barret Robbins was a big part of those early 2000s Raiders teams. RIP," another comment read.
Finally, one comment captured how many felt given the sudden news.
"Life 💔 So unfairly unpredictable," a user said.
Even the Las Vegas Raiders paid their tribute, naming him one of the league's top centers over nine seasons with the Raiders.
