NFL community in mourning after the passing of Judge David Doty

Few judges left a bigger mark on the NFL than David Doty. The architect of a landmark 1992 free agency ruling passed away on Saturday at 96, just three days shy of his 97th birthday, ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on X.

“Judge Doty devoted his life to public service and the law, presiding over NFL-related litigation for many years during his distinguished career. We express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues,” said the NFL in a statement, as per ESPN.

Appointed to the federal bench by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, David Doty built a remarkable judicial legacy. The former Marine and University of Minnesota Law School graduate presided over thousands of cases, including several NFL management-union disputes.

"Judge Doty devoted his entire professional life to serving others as a Marine, as a lawyer who served not only clients but his community in many ways, and as a U.S. District Judge for nearly four decades," Chief U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz said, per ESPN.

He oversaw the landmark free agency case following the 1987 players' strike. Then, in 1992, he ruled in favor of the players' push for unrestricted free agency.

That ruling paved the way for Reggie White's class-action lawsuit and ultimately resulted in the historic 1993 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

It won’t be wrong to say that David Doty was the most vital asset the players' association had back in the 90s. The news of his passing deeply affected football fans, who quickly took to social media to honor his massive impact on the game.

"Without Doty, we’d still be stuck in the ’80s": NFL fans pay tribute to Judge David Doty

David Doty paved the way for the modern NFL contract system and the CBA. Following the news of his passing, NFL fans flooded the comments to share their appreciation and pour out their respect on Schefter's X post.

“RIP to the judge who basically invented modern NFL free agency. Without Doty, we’d still be stuck in the ’80s with no cap, no real player movement, and owners running wild. He shaped the league more than a lot of HOFers. Respect,” a fan wrote.

"Rest in peace, Judge Doty, still the only guy who could call a blitz legal. Your rulings will keep the NFL playing forever," wrote another.

Moreover, another fan came forward to mourn the loss of the judicial heavyweight.

“Sad news 🕊️ Judge David Doty had a major impact on NFL legal history through several landmark rulings.”

Another fan echoed the sentiment, writing, “His rulings impacted players, owners, and the league for decades. A remarkable legacy.”

Lastly, another fan pointed out that despite never being a player or coach, he made one of the most meaningful impacts on the league.

"RIP. He wasn't a player or coach, but he changed the league in ways millions of fans still benefit from today."
